Bryonn Bain founded the Blackout Arts Collective in 1997. In 2001 Blackout launched the Lyrics on Lockdown tour, which travels to prisons and colleges, using hip hop and spoken word to raise consciousness about the prison industrial complex.

Bryonn himself wrongfully imprisoned during his second year at Harvard Law. Bryonn wrote The Village Voice cover story "Walking While Black" which drew the largest response in the history of the nation's most widely-read progressive newspaper.
