Long ago, most of our ancestors worshipped the Greco-Roman gods, Zeus(Jupiter), Aries(Mars), Hermes(Mercury), and so on.
It slowly died, the gods were lost in the hearts of millions, replaced by Christianity, the new Roman god. What happened to the gods of old? Where have they gone? A better question is, have the even left?
During the Renaissance, the "rebirth" of the west, what was the most striking thing that happened in that time frame? Aphrodite, Hermes, they all started appearing in art once again, the tales of them resurfaced and for the first time in nearly 900 years the west once again was a powerhouse, full of art, and knowledge, and eventually taking over the rest of the world!
In the east, in Rome(Byzantine) pockets of worshippers still lagged on until the 9th century, possibley longer, after that there was a large decline in everything that they produced, and around the time of the Renaissance in the west the East collapsed.
Why does it seem the most powerful nations always seem to be the ones that tells the tales of the Gods? In Britain, John Milton wrote his epic "Paradise Lost", a complete poem about the gods, Lord Byron was among other poets to mention the gods in his poems(

What happens next? In America, birthplace of the cinema, the Illiad and the Odyssey were alive in movies, among other things about the Gods. Again, done when America was the superpower.
Did Christ really superseed Zeus? I don't think so. I'm not suggesting anything here, but I'll leave you at it.
