Unlike
most 13 year olds at the start of the new millennium, my room was not
covered in Backstreet Boys or NSYNC posters, and Freddie prince Jr. Did not sit
in a fuzzy pink heart frame next to my bed.
Instead,
my boy band of choice was actually a band. Five syllables made up of 3 boys
that I was completely obsessed with: Blink 182.
For my
14th birthday I begged my mom for tickets to their "Take Off Your Pants
And Jacket tour"... but all the Cali dates were sold out... just when I
thought there was no chance to see them that year, she surprised me with tix to
their Vegas show at the MGM... It was going to be the most amazing day of my
life! There was so much to think about: What was I going to wear? Who would I
bring? Would Mark propose to me on stage that night? Or was he going to wait
til we had a moment alone on a beach?
Then, 6
days before the concert I had to go and get in a fucking fist fight at school
(defending one of my dumb ass friends) and ruin any chance of walking down the
aisle as Mrs. Hoppus. I was suspended for 3 days, (which initially I thought
was fantastic! I would get to watch "Saved By The Bell" re-runs and
eat mint chip ice cream till my face turned green! Woo- hoooo!) Then my
mom came home super mad and took my T.V. out of my room, and replaced it with
the biggest bomb ever when she said that because of my behavior there was no
way in hell I was going to that concert... No Zack Morris? Fine. But no
Blink 182? AHHHHHHHH!!!!!! What's an angst filled tween supposed to do?! At one
point I came up with a plan to steal my mother's car and road trip the 4 hours
to Vegas myself, but my friends bitched out and I couldn't drive stick.
So,
years went by and Blink broke up... My music tastes changed and matured, but I
always had a weakness for Mark, Tom and Travis, and would clean my apartment to
Cheshire
Cat every now and
then, but that was that. Nothing could be done, and I would never get to see
them live.
Or so I
thought...
Fast
forward to a few weeks ago- I was back home in LA for a couple of days, and my
very good friend Yamile hit me up about some T-Mobile Party in Hollywood with a
"surprise musical guest"... I rolled simply because I wanted to catch
up with Yamile, and figured there would be free food and drinks, rock on.
I was
not expecting what came next: ALL 3 members of Blink- one-eighty-fucking-two
hit the stage and I just about fainted!!! I completely GEEKED out and lost any
trace of that "I'm at an Industry thing" attitude and kick-boxed my
way to the front of the stage. It was 15 minutes of absolute heaven! I was
jumping up and down like a kangaroo singing every word to every song, it was so
satisfying. They were magical! They were electric! And they made punching
that bitch in the 7th grade feel even more awesome than it already did! I
am SO glad they reunited!
And if
that wasn't enough, guess who got Travis's drumstick?
Ps.
Come catch me on my own tour this summer with The Saturdays. Dates on the
space.
Pss. But
don’t get in a fight (Unless of course it’s AFTER one of my shows ;)
Psss. Thanks
Jimmy ;)
