Infinite Defilement- Promo 2008- Sevared Records
.. ......
Modern death metal includes quite a number of one-man acts
using drum machines. These bands seem to gain as many detractors as fans and,
unfortunately, for the most part the criticisms levelled, mainly repetitiveness
and annoying drum machines, are true. Infinite Defilement, however, is not one
of these bands.
Brain-child of Aussie Jacob Smith, Infinite Defilement has
quickly gained support in the underground, as can be seen by the fact this four
track demo is released by none other than Sevared Records. Opening with a quite
lengthy sample, which sets the mood perfectly, Methodical Degradation launches
into a strident, almost martial riff, accompanied by strong, guttural vocals.
Slowly the song picks up pace, before launching into a blistering section that
really takes the listener in, and closes with an intense slam. Crushing The
Heretic starts much the same with a lengthy sample followed by slow riffs
which lead into the main, brutal section, and closing with a slam. Final tracks
Innocence Condemned and Monster Of Society also start with a
sample, but the length of the songs ensures enough time passes between each
sample to avoid repetitiveness. The music changes effectively between blasting
and slamming sections which, rather than relying on the immediate impact of the
slam dropping, emerge seamlessly from the music and make your head nod before
you even realise it.
The production of this release, the pitfall of many one-man
bands, is excellent- each instrument is heard individually and clearly, without
sacrificing the grit and power vital to this type of music. The drum-machine
is, again unlike many similar bands, tastefully programmed and kept within the
realms of what could be done by a human drummer, rather than blasting away at
impossible tempos. Bar an interesting burping style used very briefly during
the final track, the vocals maintain a consistent tone quite reminiscent of
Angel from Cephalotripsy, though not as deep.
This release shows a lot of potential, which, if capitalised
on, should result in an impressive debut album. Expect it sometime next year,
entitled Disgorging Humanity, on Deformed Fetus Productions. But for
now, if you haven’t got it already, pick up this CD (its $4 on the ID myspazz so
you have no excuse) and you wont be disappointed.
