The Swirlies wonderful record,
They Spent Their Youthful Days In The Glittering World of Salons (which you can download for free, from the band, via
this link) is easily one of the greatest modern albums I've laid my ears on. It's oblique, fuzzy, and full of mystery. It's funny that the first time I received a copy of this CD, at 17, all I could hear was noise. The band has had a huge influence on me musically and I'm happy to be able to pay tribute to them the best way I know how -- through song.
The song appeared magically, as the best ones usually do. I sang a cappella over a drum beat and everything fit around it without any fuss. Sonically I tried to bring out the minimal, lofi, drifting, shoegaz-y qualities of the original, but I hadn't heard the song in months so the end result only vaguely resembles the original.
I hope you enjoy my track, and also, I hope you check out the Swirlies (and the original version of this song!) and all the other great acts that fill this tribute to the brim.
Reverse Engine Records will release the tribute for free at the end of this month. Many thanks to Dave for encouraging me to submit.
