If you've ever walked through a store called Hot Topic you will see a lot of kids buying clothes that express their individuality, as are thousands of other kids at that moment at the other Hot Topics strewn across America. They cant stand shopping at Aeropostale or Pac Sun because those clothes look just like all the other kids. My point is that there is stuff out there that appears to have an edge, hell a dark side, but really its just as manufactured and devoid of true self expression as any other thing. Carlos Mencia is the comedic equivalent of that.  A person once said to me Mind of Mencia is just like The Dave Chappelle Show but without the jokes Whoever said that, thanks. Its not just that Carlos Mencia isnt funny; its that he is so deliberately trying to be edgy that I feel like I am getting hit in the head with a metal pipe when I see him. Its like a child saying something bad just to get attention. Eventually, you kill that kid. The thing that makes it so obvious is the constant apologizing and prefacing he has to make before every joke. He feels like he has to explain that he isnt trying to step on anybodys toes and that whatever he is saying is just a joke on how it really is. Gee, shucks. Were all just people! Why not just say whatever stupid thing you have to say and then just stand by it? Id at least respect you. Clay Miles said this, Comedians only trash other comedians when they cant do their jokes (I am paraphrasing), mind you he wasnt talking about Mencia, he was just talking about in general. The thing is I could do Mencias kind of humor, but why bother? He points out old stereotypes and then says were all just people. That is pretty much the definition of being a hypocrite. The thing is I hate the term edgy itself, say what you believe in and stand by it. Comedy is the forum for free expression, you cant please everyone. Say the dark shit in your mind if thats your thing but dont placate it so its to be enjoyed by the masses. In short, have balls.

Next time Ill say some positive stuff about some comedians I love, just to lighten things up.

It's because you're white, isn't it?

At least Carlos Mencia didn't work today.

As much as I respect every comedian...I would have to agree with you in the aspect that you should stick to your guns...Don't apologize for your comedy(jokes) and you can never please everyone... I like Carlos he's good...I don't know if you know Gabriel Iglesias....Hes a good latino comedian who isn't always about stereotypes...You should listen to him...I think you would def like him.....

Fuckin right on Hamptone. Screw Mencia and his Hollywood hack bullshit comedy. I used to like his stand up before he became a piece of shit who I just see as a racist who can't write a good joke to save his life.

Look, Carlos Mencia may be a phony, and Carlos Mencia may be massively prejudiced under the guise of being "anti-pc" and "real", and Carlos Mencia might steal his material...

I'm just saying, these are all possibilities.
-------------------------------------------------

That being said, so what? There's always a lowest common denomenator which appeals to large audiences without having the substance of some of the better stuff around. That's always the case. Why do you think that Arrested Development was cancelled while [insert banal TV show here] is still going strong after [too many] seasons?  There are countless examples in countless mediums which show us that the person who creates the most watered down appearence of whatever it is that people aspire to be: sexy, Xtreme, viscious, etc... gets the audience, and the people who spend more time on their material than their publicity usually suffer for it. In a medium like TV or movies where everything has to be accessible to someone with a .05 second attention span, of course the people who cultivate an image more than material are going to get plenty of attention. C'est la vie, which I believe is French for "Deal with it, asshole." (as a side note,  I do speak French, just not the same French as those people from that place). So  yeah, sometimes talent/skill and fortune line up, sometimes not, there is a correlation, but it's clearly not that strong.

God I'm lighthearted this morning. Thanks for ruining my day, Hampton.

:-D
