Boy Bathing Chat About Being 'Fire' Starters Apr 14, 2008 Story by: Michael Tedder
David Hurwitz, frontman/guitarist for insurgent New York indie rockers the Boy Bathing, says his group was not directly inspired to take their name from such sensitive guy classics as "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" and "The Boy With The Arab Strap." But he does feel his group's self-released debut album, A Fire To Make Preparations (July 15), fits right in with the Smiths and Belle & Sebastian's heart-on-sleeve style.
"It's pretty raw, emotionally," Hurwitz says of the album. "Fans are going to hear a band fearlessly putting itself out there."
The Boy has had their songs featured on compilations alongside the Arcade Fire and Sufjan Stevens and has played shows with Kevin Devine and Lou Barlow. But these profile-raising ventures didn't make their debut album any easier to record, as it took almost two years for it to get completed because of financial limitations.
"We'd record some songs then have to work some more to get more money," recall Hurwitz. "Plus, I'm a real perfectionist, and we had to mix the album twice because we weren't happy with it the first time."
And just for the record, though Hurwitz says he didn't have it in mind when naming his group, he does say that "The Boy With The Arab Strap" is one of his favorite songs, though he admits he was surprised when he discovered what the NC-17 content actually refers to. Just goes to show that there's more than one way to be raw.
