Current mood: awake
have a bit of downtime here in nyc before returning to san francisco tomorrow. the last 10 days have been a real blast out here on the east coast. djing in DC and NYC have given me different appreciations for the vibes of the cities and the people that live there as well as some perspective on my own regular routine back in SF.
DC was the longest stretch of the trip and i really enjoyed the city. maybe it was just the people that i was hanging out with, but i noticed that everyone was really making things happen. i was inspired to see folks grinding it out on the business and creative tip, carving out their own life story that they could take pride in. during my dj gigs here i really enjoyed that the crowds were up for going deep with the music. i've always been a dj that doesn't really stay up on mainstream music and that turned out to be an asset in dc. even at peak time on a friday or saturday night, i could drop a record that everyone was hearing for the first time and the energy in the room just worked. my hosts in DC - daniel and katie - were a great, thank you much. i came close to wanting to take their dog home with me.
I made a short stop in Philly to meet up with my cousin Bruz as well as a first in-person interaction w Record Breakin Music label-head Junior. it was interesting to talk shop with this person that i've worked with on releasing records with over the phone and email for the past 6 months or so. the internet offers great opportunity to create actual things in the offline world. this is an interesting time we live in. looking forward to the upcoming release of the Joy Jones 12" on Record Breakin that includes a remix i did.
A short bus ride later, i arrived in new york. one thing i hadn't thought too much about until now is how close all of these big cities are on the east coast. dc-philly-nyc-boston and probably more. out west it's a long haul to LA or Portland or Seattle. the immediacy of the cities on the east coast provides some cool opportunities to just dip out for a weekend or a day here or there. it's been fun wandering the streets in ny, soaking in the vibes, catching up w friends and collaborators, djing, and staying up much later than i'm used to. hehe
I'm looking forward to getting back in the mix in san francisco. i'll be coming back with a nice stack of records to sample and enjoy. this trip has been long enough that it feels complete. i feel blessed that i'm able to travel with my record bag and bring the spinnerty vibe to new places. i look forward to more to come. i've posted some pictures that i've taken along the way in the photo section. feel free to peep at your leisure.
