So... I didn't win a car that would be too small to fit my gear, or another guitar that I wouldn't love as much as my Teles... I got to meet BB King, John Mayer, Rick Nielsen (of Cheap Trick), Bruce Iglauer (founder of Alligator Records) and many more cool people. I played in front of a sold out crowd at the House of Blues in Chicago, and lit the room up. All I can say is that I did my best. I played well and with much more respect to the blues and the music itself than the winner (who played the guitar between his legs and hopped around like Chuck Berry).
The contest was relatively Jive... I was consoled by the fact that both Rick Nielsen and Bruce Iglauer told me that I was head and shoulders above the rest of the guys. That means a lot to me! ...oh yeah, and they wouldn't let me sing! What kind of blues player doesn't sing???
I guess I'll be local for a little while longer :)
Much Love,
Laith

keep on keeping on. It's not so bad being the baddest local for a minute! ;-)

Hope you had a good experience though. First is worst, second is best!

Hey Laith, heard of the king of the blues tourny, in a guitar world magazine, after reading the column on it, I had to check out the competitors on youtube. I watched Matt O'Ree play and it was ok I guess, kinda non linear and nothing but flash, that 16 year old made me laugh the way hed blurt out his passages and after 3 minutes of the same old crap I turned to your video. I was fucking amazed, from the 1st 3 notes!!! Not only should you have won the competition I also believe you should have been up there with BB, musicianship alone should of been the deciding factor. I love your creativity and your ability to really speak with your instrument instead of just playing some notes in a basic blues scale. Looking forward to hearing your name mentioned among greats such as Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King, Muddy Waters, and the ultimate late great Robert Johnson.

Matt
