After strutting silkily onto the scene back in March, feverish disco anthem 'Start and Begin' in tow, Ceri James provided us with sufficient intrigue for months to follow. The album of the same title opens with the aforementioned hit which starts (and begins...how droll) with an effortless cool unmatched by many contemporaries. The bigger picture is far more diverse. Add to the cauldron a dream-like Americana and you have yourself an unusual result. Imagine Travolta in a flannel shirt, if you will. Or Clint in flares. Ahem. Standout tracks include 'Agree To Disagree', where James' poetic license shines through, and 'Rose Of My Life', which rolls on with a rockabilly stomp.
Another significant moment is the penultimate song 'For The Loss Of AFriend', which digs deep into James' seemingly troubled past. The entire collection hits the listener with a sense of poignancy and genuine emotion that would be hard to fake. However, amongst the flowers there are a few weeds, such as 'I've Seen The Devil' with its droning vocals and wailing guitars, and 'Without My Girl', the lyrics of which carry much contrivance, and an overall sense that James is trying too hard. That said, on the whole, 'Start and Begin' is a solid first effort from a promising singer/songwriter.
