Tonight I went to a friend's showing of a work-in-progress dance piece. This piece has been a work-in-progress for many years and my friend is a professional artist who tours the world and is very respected in his field. After the performance was a Q&A feedback session with people offering a few suggestions, comments, observations and most asking questions about certain aspects of the piece, the development of it, etc... Now, while this is common practice in the 'art world', and a valid and serious part of the artist's development, my question is this: would this model work in music? Could this model work if a band were to invite their piers, some industry people, etc to a live performance that was presented as a developmental stage of their career and then sit down at the end and have a Q&A session with those present? Part of me thinks that this could be a revolution in developing an artist's career - another part of me thinks that it couldn't possibly work due to the nature of the perceived difference between the two art forms. Anyway, lemme know what you think!
