Last week I intro'd a really personal song at a gig by saying, "When life gives you lemons, they say make lemonade. When you're a songwriter and life gives you lemons, you make songs." But where to draw the line, in baring one's soul vs. giving too much information?
There have been times when I've edited myself. Songs that are simply too painful to finish, topics too tender. I've never written about losing my dad. A song about choosing not to have kids has been heard by only a few.
The beauty of writing is that we can take on personas, create characters and mix and mingle from our own reality, leaving the listener to draw their own conclusions and relate from their own feelings and experiences. Actually in the song In the Moment, that's what this line means, "It's like gazing at stars from a faraway field. Closing the gaps of what's fake and what's real."
Ok...I must admit this was a stalling tactic, a breather from working on some new lyrics!
