Growing up with Guatemalan immigrants as parents meant good food, parties where openness about alcohol was not given a drowned thought, dancing was a prerequisite for being a good man, and the love of music was standard. Unfortunately, being straight was part of the deal. This month, my best discovery was the band Kumbia Queers, a collective of lez-spanics from Argentina and Mexico that express their pride with cheeky
cumbia covers of popular songs. Their
myspace includes tequila-ready takes on The Cure's Love Song and Madonna's La Isla Bonita.
Head on over, grab an
appropriately themed drink of your choice, and the sunny tunes will outshine the
grey outside.
