HEY!

this is a short note to say hi. hi! i am buried so damn deep in this studio box i can barely believe it... this is how i used to spend ALL my time month after month...back in "the day".

Now total studio submersion is a luxury, so as excruciating as this is, i am LOVVVING it. In the meantime, a few quick things!!!!

1. Upcoming shows: PLEASE JOIN US this Saturday in Atlanta. The lineup is rammed, the air is filled with heat, we are going to go bananas in the dirty south. We play at 9pm, after Ghostland Observatory, and before Sound Tribe Sector Nine. Bring diapers!!!! We are sooo mega stoaked to test out some of the new creations!
Tickets

2. Street Scene!!!!! Going apeshit once again in the streets??? this time in san diego? WE'LL BE THERE!!!! WOOT! Street Scene is off the hook every year and we close out our stage starting at 10pm...come get NUTTY and see how much wobble we can squeeze into the streets...
Tickets

3. Symbiosis: probably the illest lineup of the year! Coco Rosie?! Amon tobin? Caspa? Yard Dogs? all at the same fest!?!!? plus they go over the top in every direction. Right now is the last chance to buy the earlybird discount tickets. you should come from far and wide for this one. heck! you should probably SKIP BURNINGMAN and go to Symbiosis, mark my words... WAY BETTER!!!!!!
Tickets

4. That said...if you ARE going to burningman, i will be out there doing as the freaks do. I am excited to be out there for my 12th year! Soooooo many good friends are heading out and there are millllions of dope camps and installations in the works. i;ll be camping with EL CIRCO & THE DO LAB, and that zone will be out of control.
Since the organizers of burningman are very wierd, and charge people hundreds of dollars to go, but then do not fund any of the musical craziness that everyone who is attending EXPECTS, the sound systems need to fund themselves. Often 20-50,000$ ...its bezerk. So if you are coming out, toss some coin at my buddies, they work hard and have been doing so since 2000AD:
http://elcirco.thedolab.com/

And here is my schedule:

Thursday 9/3/09 or technically friday morning
Roots Society
TEN & Esplanade
1:15a-2:30a

Friday   9/4/09 or technically saturday morning
BassCamp
TWO & Biology
12:00am-1:00am

Also on Friday   9/4/09 or technically saturday morning
Nexxus
TEN & Extinct
2:30am-3:30am

Saturday 9/5/09 or could be said as sunday morning
EL CIRCO DOME
TEN & Biology
1:30am-2:45am

Sunday Morining Set 9/6/09
OUTSIDE @ THE DO LAB & EL CIRCO
TEN & Biology
6:30am-8:00am

food for thought:

Privileged people have high potential for spending the excess that constitutes their privilege on themselves. that means: they have an easier time having more fun.

But they also have high potential for spending their excess doing OTHER things.

that means: as privileged people we have an easier time helping others and "giving back"

Festivals are fun. And a downright festival of art/culture/pleasure like Burningman is also fun.

We ask that if you enjoy Bassnectar out in the wide open of burningman, you consider donating equal amounts of time back home giving back to your community. However you choose to. If you need some suggestions, we have some for you!

If you don't like me saying this, just remember it is a humble request/suggestion.. not a self righteous mandate.

If you are reading this i would wager 99% likelihood that you are privileged and have the potential of a battery cell to put a little bit more oomf towards giving back.

i hope you do!
:)

MUCH LOVE

I love to see that your continuing the overwhelming greatness a show combining bassnectar and STS9 can bring! I can't wait until you guys make it back up to SEATTLE. I'm anticipating the news of an upcoming venue! So any reason for you guys to come up and show us some love is good enough for me! Your last show at the showbox was insane!!! The ceiling was coming down!!!
I have been extremely influenced by your shows, and those of STS9. And its not just being moved by amazing music, and rumbling bass. Its the positive message being portrayed, the feeling of being part of a movement. I have been compelled to write many letters to various senators, and even the president and his affiliates. Addressing many topics like this failing drug war, and not limited to the excess of unregistered/dangerous sex offenders. I recently attended Hempfest as well here in Seattle, and feel empowered by the message you and groups like these are putting out there.
The positivity is rubbing off. So don't stop what your doing, making a difference, even if small, or one by one, its a movement! A revolution is in our midst! Thanks for the motivation that your message has supplied me. The combination of music and knowledge has created a passionate  work hard to pass on important necessary knowledge to others.

hopefully there will be no "holier than thou" type speech like last year at your Root Society performance.  starting to sound a little preachy to me Lorin.  and if you didn't mean to come across that way, you should know that you totally did.

oh yeah?

what was it i said?

more specifically what did you hear?

nothing i said was 'holier than thou' but maybe you couldnt clearly hear what i was saying

it was the equivalent of what i wrote above.

but im guessing you didn't hear/understand (cuz it was loud?)

If I remember correctly something to the tune of "if I don't see some changes in the people of our country taking place, I will not be back at Burning Man again for 2009" was what you said.  I didn't take that as holier than thou though.  I think it was more like "yeah it's sweet to rage like this, but you have to aware of what's going on as well"  but that's just me.  Can't wait for Root Society this year though, Freq Nasty, Bassnectar, Vibesquad and David Starfire in the same night....Geezy Peezy.  I appreciate you speaking your mind though.  We don't have to listen, but since you have the mic, we do have to hear you!  Thanks for putting the love into what you do.  Wish I could afford the Burn and Symbiosis :(

Back to explain myself as you requested Lorin... there is a possibility that the 10 people I was there with and I misheard you, I'll admit.  However, what we took from your little speech was that burners are losing their way and partying too much and don't even know what the real reason for burning man is anymore.  I just felt offended that were making a generalized statement like that and made it sound like you thought you were better than all the burners there, (that were there to support you and listen to your set) leaving a sour taste in my mouth.  You mentioned you probably wouldn't be back next year and it looks like you've got it all scheduled out, so I'm curious if your views have changed.  Perhaps I am missing something.

I still love the beats and frequencies, but I could go without all the speeches before the last times I've seen you here in CO.  In any event, I hope that I was wrong and that you can stay humble and keep up the basssssssssss.

cool
thanks for the discussion

Veronica to sum it up:

1. appreciate your honesty.
2. i appreciate being called out. when i deserve it, it is always a great thing to be held accountable.
3. in this case i do not deserve that. You and your friends misunderstood me and assumed the worst.
4. i do not hold it again you for doing so...it was loud and mayhemic in there, and it was spur of the moment for me to say anything, definitely not the IDEAL forum for getting my point across.
5. i am involved with music because it is a vehicle for THOUGHT, so please accept that i will express myself when and how i choose. i do not ever want to be preachy, holier than thou, or even annoying. my intent is to put words to sentiments we are all feeling (a kind reminder, always including myself in the audience) or to give voice to opinion that i feel needs to be expressed. In some cases, if i am talking about something you already know about, ASSUME THE MESSAGE IS NOT DIRECTED AT YOU. And in some cases, if i am speaking about something at a show, assume it is meaningful to me, and allow me the courtesy of doing what i want at my own show... im not up there just to be a DJ.

now specifically, what i was getting at was something the lines of:

we are all REALLY privileged (myself included) and it's really easy in times of government turmoil for the privileged to become kind of dazed (like the boys on Pleasure Island in Pinnochio...or like the middle class in Nazi Germany who right before shit hit the fan were living normal lives including restaurants, museums, parties, etc etc,and then WHAM!)

Although i knew in my heart that Obama was a corporate whore and part of the system, i beleived it was a necessary evil for the country to wake up and AT LEAST realize that:

1. Republican Party is downright UNNACCEPTABLE
2. RACE is a non issue in politics...or SHOULD BE.

My poorly-made point was that if our country failed to do the simple task of voting Obama into office, i didnt feel i would be able to spare the luxury of coming back to burningman, where its all about the fun/art/etc

it wasn't holier than thou, it was meant as motivational encouragement to my social circle

and even the summary i typed up there is incomplete cuz i would want to write an essay expanding on just about every point, from the election, to what i see the citizens DOING about the problems that face us, to HOW, etc...

but i reserve the right out in the desert (or anywhere) to say whatever i want, and will continue to do so.

but im sorry you and your friends misunderstood and assumed the worst.

gotta love OPM for having my back!

and gotta appreciate YOU very much for talking to me about it and giving me an opportunity to set Le Record straight

:)

Well I appreciate YOU coming in and clearing it up, because I hate to assume the worst about someone I appreciate so much... I adore your music, support your thoughts and your cause and was disheartened to say the least.  I am very glad to hear I mis-understood, which I most DEFINITELY did after reading your explanation.  I can't make it to the playa this year for a few reasons, but I hope you have an awesome time and I hope that you rock their faces right the fuck off. :)

Sorry to say it, but I'm going to have to agree with Veronica on this one. I too was one of the unhappy campers that left the root dome, not only with a bad taste in my mouth, but also a feeling of disgust. I have enjoyed your music for years, and until that point, have always looked forward to rockin' out with you on the Playa. However, that night I felt that you were out of line.

I commend you for your forward thinking and active participation in social matters; however, there is definitely a time and a place to discuss these... at a party, in the middle of a desert is definitely not one of them. You spoke to the crowd as if we were ignorant, selfish, and naive. In my opinion, the Burning Man Community is composed (primarily) of people who spend a significant amount of time pursuing goals that positively benefit society. In fact, I would wager that the concentration of "aware" people is much higher on the Playa than most places in the world.

It felt as though you were trying to make us feel guilty for participating in the festival... that we should have be allocating our time and resourses to help better society. Well, you were there too... rockin' out... for the entire week. Good deed dooers need a break too, Lauren. Hopefully you'll think before you start preaching to a choir of angels. I value your opinion, as I do most others; however, you have a strong voice... please use it in the appropriate places on the appropriate channel.

One last note... I'm pretty sure that you said last year would be your last time on the Playa... interesting to see you're all set up to go...

That being said... have a swimmingly blissful week in the dust.

arg.
katie, youre not paying attention.

i said it would be my last year "if" X,Y,Z

unspoken and implied was Obama (not because i think he is the DreamPrez that everyone thinks, but because the country needed that symbolic victory to show that it was less racist and less idiotic that it had appeared for 8 years)

i did not say i WAS NOT COMING BACK.

and that was less my point.

the POINT was we are all blessed and it is up to us to balance out our privilege/luxury with work/responsibility.

Was i saying that *YOU* personally were not? no. Was i saying anything specific about ANYONE? Not to the degree you took it.

I was voicing a sentiment i felt could have been voiced every hour on the hour. it was one of encouragement and balance.

but included in the message was a reminder that there is work to be done, and that privilege confers responsibility.

if you cannot see that (and how am i going to spread that message if im not "there too"?) and you choose to misunderstand my words and intentions, i have no interest in catering to you, so as to keep you as a fan.

i go to painstaking lengths to take people seriously, to listen to people's thoughts, and to respond accordingly.

you were not listening then.

and you have not been reading now.

and i admit it is upsetting.

I am sorry that I’ve upset you… this is not my intention. I guess part of why this rubbed me the wrong way today is because it’s something that has been eating at me since that night at the Root Society. I admire your musical talent, you candor, and your drive to create a better place for us to live. I did, in fact, read the entire blog and do have a better understanding of the message you were trying to convey that night. However, I think it was a bit lost in translation that evening. If I remember correctly, you were feeling a bit rushed as you had to hitchhike in from the gate. Perhaps this added to my erroneous translation of your statement.

You are in a particularly special place. You have the stage on which you can stand in order to deliver a message to a large number of people. This is something that is quite powerful and if used correctly, effective. I completely agree that we must balance our privilege and luxury with that of our work and responsibility. Far too many people take for granted the things that we have that so many others do not. And, yes, this is a message that should be conveyed on the hour every hour.

I spoke with a number of people who took what you said that wrong way and were angered/saddened by the situation. Your thoughts and ideals seem to come from a place of love and determination. It was not my “choice to misunderstand [your] words and intentions,” but for whatever reason they were, in fact, misinterpreted. My point is this… use your intelligence, your morals, your words, and that oh so whompy bass to rock peoples’ mind, soul, and body. If there were more people in this world willing to stand as loud and tall as you we’d be in a much better place. Just keep in mind that your words resonate… choose them with care so that your true intentions are heard loud and clear.

With Respect,
Katie

:)
thanks...i FULLY hear you about that "words resonate...choose them with care" i think about that so much that i would say i stop myself from talking/writing 85% of the time. SO often i want to say something (in everyday life) but i stop cuz i feel like i do not have the right wording.

____IN OTHER NEWS_____  speaking of the "right wording" and totally unrelated:

i am using a quote by one of my new favorite authors (albert einstein) in the liner notes of the next CD, and it is NUTS how many translations there are of his words!!!! i'm going bananas trying to find the correct one (who wants to misquote einstein?? not i)

but you can google: "einstein the world as i see it" and search the phrase talking about "the most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious" and find like 8 million ways to say his quote.

arg.

anyhow, that was a tangeant.

Katie, thank you for your thoughts!!!
MUCH LOVE

another unrelated tangent for you, lorin: (but this time, it's good...)

after listening to you for a couple years, and never having seen you, i finally had the privilege of having you rock my shit this weekend in austin, namely at the aftershow where you fucking raged until the last second. i really appreciate it man, and hope you continue until you can't anymore. you're INCREIIIIIBLE!! i was at rothbury this year and salty that you were there the year before and i missed it- such a kickass festival. anyways, keep doing what you're doing, speaking your mind, and putting your thoughts out there. i'll keep coming! :)
