Okay, for starters lets remember the rules: YOU MUST GO AND SEE/SUPPORT COMIC BOOK MOVIES!

That said, I went to the HULK premier (complete with green carpet!) at Universal Sunday, had some nice snacks, hung out with Seth Green (always nice) and watched a movie with about a bazillion other people. No bullshit, this was the biggest premier I've ever been to. They converted an amphitheater just to make everything Hulk size!

I'll just get this out of the way; Bruce Banner is no Tony Stark. It's not the fault of Edward Norton (he's a great actor) its more the fault of being a passive character, which Banner is. Its tough to be interesting when all you're doing is trying NOT to be you. Which in Banner's case, is the HULK. Stark is interesting even not being Iron Man because he's always in charge of what he's doing. He's only running away from his heart not his mission.

The movie unfortunately isn't helped by an unclear sense of dramatic purpose for either the hero or the villain. These guys need motivation to do what they do to be interesting and you just don't feel it here. Little things like "why?" remain a bit muddy. Now don't get all poopie in the diapers because there is some cool shit, one just wishes the cool shit was there for a purpose. Basically, the HULK SMASH stuff needed to be strung together with heavier rope. Another issue I had was that the actual ass kicking didn't drive the story. When Banner Hulked-out it seemed kind of random and random doesn't maintain drama. Ya needs that drama kids!

The cast is great and the acting was all very good so kudos there. The big guy suffers from the CGI curse of being too close to human though. We all know the technology just ain't there yet to pull that trick off. The FX team does try so give them points. And there are some great action set pieces. Plus, this Hulk looks better than the last one (mostly) so more points given.

The best parts we're the nods to the fans which Marvel is really good about. Some great cameo's are in here as well so watch for those. Over all, not a bad attempt but you watch the credits feeling a lot of potential was left on the table. Personally, I'd like to see another HULK movie because it seems a natural fit for summer and popcorn.

So to summarize, YOU MUST GO SEE THE INCREDIBLE HULK AND COMIC MOVIES IN GENERAL! Even if they miss the mark (a bit) we must support the attempt!

Peace and Rock.

in my opinion, being someone who studies 3d programs and has been makin characters, from first trailer i had this feeling that the modeler on the hulk took his zbrush way too seriously, making everything look overmodeled , yknow what i mean, every muscle is seen even when not flexed, it can be said they wanted to have light and shadow bounce in a comicbooky drastic way, i can see that as a plausible reason but somehow i just can get the image of an overzealous sculptor goin to town on his zbrush while watchin some keown display in front of him and listening to power metal lol

You just confirmed all my fears a bout the movie bro.
Contrary to most of the other opinions I've herd about the first Hulk movie, I love it.
When I started hearing about Hulk 2 I thought that taking Ang Lee off of the project
and going in the direction they did for this one was gonna be a mistake.
But at least my disappointment is out of the way, and I can just go and enjoy some cool fight scenes.

Much Thanx Bro.

Did I hear a rumor of the El Capitain America making a cameo..? Some have speculated a more up front cameo, rather than the "hidden in the background" sheild like in Iron Man..? But an actual cameo..? If so, im more curious whose capable of filling the boots..rightfully! Unlike the late 80's live-action Captain America Movie..And even better.. who'll play the Red Skull..? Im just relieved atleast these arent as hokey as the oldies.. Toxic Avenger, Garbage Pail Kids Movie, Swamp Thing, Generation X series, etc. But the oldies are classics for a reason. Theyre Classic.
I just cant wait for a Lobo, Deadpool, Witchblade, The Darkness, And might I say Jean Claude Van Dammage as Gambit in a flick!! All round I cant wait for te Hulk.

GREAT REVIEW.. You always tell it like it is. Cause as I anticipated (IamLegendstyle) the CGI is a once again most likely a failed human cloning attempt. But I alsoexpect, where it may lack in dramatics, Im sure the great cast makes up for. And in Liv's case, hopefully for fooling me into watching the disappointing "Strangers".

PREPARE YOURSELVES COMIC MOVIE WORMS!! FOR WITCHBLADE IS COMING 2009!! IF THESE FILMS ARE THIS GOOD NOW, IMAGINE A YEAR FROM NOW!! Witchblade! Eventually (hopefully) The Darkness!!

Thanx, sorry for the novel

Wow that sounds really fun being there at Premier with the Celebrities!

KUDOS for you Marc! Well, I considered you one of the Celebrities long time ago.

I'll definitely watch it, specially now that you recommended it.

Honestly, after seeing the Trailer, I felt the CG Hulk wasn't that realistic. It still looks plastic.

But anyway, I'm still excited to see the Movie.

YES to Supporting ALL the Comic Book Movies!

I wanted to see the Hulk as soon as I heard about it, but I guess Marvel considers the first one a failure (more of a human drama than a Hulk movie, really...but with giant CGI mutated dogs). That said, I like Ed Norton and Liv Tyler, and I think that this flick has a lot of potential. However, I think the lack of publicity mixed with the stigma attached from the previous flick (I understand them to be unrelated) may hurt this movie's box office standing.

That said, I'm still holding out for a kick ass Avengers movie. They just need to make a movie about Thor and Captain America, and we're ready to go!

I appreciate your review.. And I do try to see the movies in the theater. Sometimes life gets in the way tho. I am looking forward to seeing this movie and taking the kids. Maybe this weekend for Father's Day?

Of course, now the obligatory response. Because most of this is Hollywood trying to get the majority audience into the film, I try to keep that in perspective. I personally liked the first Hulk movie (Hell, I liked Daredevil). For me, it is cool just to see the treatment of these classic characters. I accept the CGI problems. People tend to have a problem wrapping their brain around it if it looks too real. I like looking for the cameos and comic book references.

I can't wait to see this film... Followed closely by Hellboy, Dark Knight, Wanted, Captain America, Thor, etc.

And I too am chomping at the bit to see my favorite thrown up on the big screen... The Darkness!!!!

Sincerely,

The Nomad

For me personally Hulk is one of the must intriguing characters there is, but not because of the Hulk himself but the human behind it Bruce Banner. He is the one with the troublelish (if thats a word) side. Peter David did a magnificent work pulling out his psychological trauma and all. Why can they just take that approach to it. Is a darker and more dramatic look for it.

Hmm, and I just thought that having Edward Norton on it was going to change the bad taste left on my mouth of the first one...oh well...I guess the Green Goliath will never have his day of glory. he really deserves...no body seems to understand the character.

If you want the green giant smashing stuff only, well by the game. But if you are making a movie of it, please make sure you dig deep inside the mind of the man that is the Hulk. Special FX are cool but only if they are supporting the story. It becomes a character itself.

thanks marc, your reviews are always useful.. anyway, I'm a long-lasting comic fan, but we have to be honest... comic movies are pure entertainment, so we can't expect so much motivation in them, they're not spike's malcolm x... I just go to the movie theatre to have 2 hours or more of fun and cool stuff with my beloved comics' characters.. that' all.. does he smash something big in a big screen? I'll be there!!!
why should I go to see wanted?.... ;)
as for jackie.. please, choose someone who looks like him.. beautiful, cute, young (not his grandfather banderas, man!) and really bad.. with a nasty look, if you know what I mean!!
see you in chicago!!!

I dont think the hulk missed its mark, in fact i felt Marvel made up for that last hulk film. I enjoyed every minute. Just because this flick is not Ironman Fans should not go into this movie attempting to recapture what we experienced in shellhead's movie. Comics are the shit right now, and comic book related films have not let me down so far this summer.(knock on wood)

I just got back and it was really good. All the other character apearances were nice. The music in that one scene was a nice touch. The bad guys were awesome too. Did we get a glimpse of what Captain America might be like? It was just as good as Iron Man but in it's own way. I bet we hear an announcment about a sequel by the end of next week.

First off, YES, SUPPORT comic book movies. Secondly, I liked this movie way more than the first. I kinda felt that the Hulk graphic in the first looked a little better texture-wise but I TRULY dug the angry Hulk in this one. Seems like they left a lot of holes in the story for some type of fill-in later. I got the sense they were picking up where the first movie left off even though it was supposed to be entirely different. Overall though, it was a good movie in my opinion. The more crazy and psychotic the character, the more I like it. Big, mean, and tear shit up, THAT'S how it's supposed to be done.. Thanx for the review.

Went to go see the hulk and I've gotta say parts of it were amazing(mostly the action sequences)
My only problem with it was the acting/dialog at times seemed very forced for lack of a better word, almost corny. Not at all what you what you would expect from such amazing top rate character actors. And I personally think the CG was better in the first one which went with more of
a "HULK" as opposed to a chiseled bodybuilder physique.
But those are just nit picky things(at least there were no hulk dogs)overall it was an enjoyable experience and I was quite satisfied. And on an ending note is anyone else drooling over the
inevitable prospect of an Avengers movie yet,get me a bib cause I know I am.

I agree wit ya Mark.
It is light years past the first horrible attempt.
To really nail this Marvel needs balls. They need to Consider doing a R rated picture even if need be and showing a real monster and the reason why Banner would want it gone so badly. YES KIDS that means no happy meals :( Video games could keep up thou and Marvel would have to count on the diehard fans alone but they could carry it because they underestimate us. Besides the more you tell someone they can't see something the more they want it and they just might snatch the happy meal crowd anyway. Yes they would loose some of the gen audience but hardcore fans would see it 8 times so it would balance out. Someday they will make the leap. The Darknight I hope will show the way and lead and be brave. D.C. will get back on track because of this movie alone! I wasn't quite sure what it was at first, and was still trying to put the ol finger on it and you managed to hit the nail on the head. Thanks for clearing that one up, it was beginning to give me a migrain. I totally agree with ya, he did seem to hulk out at random. This was one of those movies I wish could have been 3 hours long to take get in everything it needed. Kinda like the first Alien vs. Predator, but exactly the opposite. Way too much time building up these characters only to have them killed off in 5 seconds at the end of the movie. That movie definitely should have been longer towards the end too. Overall I definitely felt it (The Hulk) deserved my $9.50, but like you said, could have been a little better.

Oh, and you freakin' kick ass.
