Hey guys,

I wanted to check in to tell you about a trip I took recently to Denver for the Democratic National Convention. In two words: eye-opening. You see, traditionally I haven't been that politically active but for a variety of reasons I find myself being compelled to participate in this years election. Irrespective of your political affiliation you have to acknowledge the historical relevance of this years race...on both sides. A few months ago I was asked to participate in an online viral video for Barack Obama and I jumped at the opportunity.

More recently, I have become a spokesperson for Declare Yourself. It is a bi-partisan group that not only helps educate you on the political process but also makes registering to vote incredibly easy. This group is particularly meaningful to me because it is purely about people being active. At the end of the day I want what's best for this country and an active youth ensures a brighter future. Keep your eyes open for the new campaign. Go to declareyourself.org for more information.

At the DNC, Cash and I were fortunate enough to see President Clinton speak as well as Biden and Obama. I have been blessed to witness almost every sports and entertainment event but nothing compares to what took place on Invesco Field. The energy was palpable and the crowd was infused with the hope. On a more humorous side, I have never seen the stars and stripes used as a fashion print/accessory so liberally. Some makeover reality show producer needs to hop on a plane for Minneapolis asap because I am sure the outfits at the RNC will be just as patriotic or as Christian would say "fierce." Lol! Here is one of my favs.

Lastly, I'm starting a fun competition on ibeatyou.com's new Myspace application In homage to the upcoming election… upload a picture of yourself being patriotic. I just uploaded my entry from the DNC.

Take care,
Jay_eh

It is an amazing time in American History. Everyone needs to take part this year, regardless of your opinion of politics.

Yeah, now all that has to be decided is whether you're for someone w/limited experience and community organizing on their resume who helps advance minorities in this country at the top of the ticket for the biggest job in the world or someone w/limited experience in smaller governments on their resume who helps advance the women's movement in this country at the bottom part of the ticket for the biggest job in the world paired w/a couple of old white dudes :)

It is nice to know, one way or another history will be made this political year but I TOTALLY agree w/you Jess, that people should not ONLY get involved in what politics really means to their lives but find out more about who they're really voting for instead of falling for slogans or bumper sticker phrases or relying on idiot bloggers like me for their political information and "truth" that can sometimes cover up realities of policies the ones behind them want to put in place.

I liken it to the Wizard of Oz: "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!" and vote for me anyway, is wrong any way you look at it.

Hey Jessica, great photo of you at the convention. I agree, this years presidental race is going to be historic if either side wins. On one side we have what might be our first African-American president. On the other side we might have our first woman Vice President. I also want to say how cool it is that you signed up to be a spokes person for Declare Yourself. I just registered to vote last week through them at school. Cant believe I didnt vote in the last two elections. Then again I didnt see anyone deserving might vote till now. Oh, I also picked up season one of Dark Angel The other day.
Lookin good while kick'n'ass in the show!!

Even though its currently not feasible, I think it would also be wise to encourage learning about third parties. One day we could make it about voting for a party that represents all of someone's views instead of the lesser of two evils.

Hey Jess,

I have to say I was always very intimidated to reply to one of your blogs...well more star stuck. I am a huge fan you see.

But I felt I needed to say my opinion on this topic.

This is a very historical time for our country. It really is history in the making. On the one side we have the first African American candidate in a major political party, which is a huge step in alot of ways. On the other we have the first female Vice Presidential candidate. Although I really don't think McCain and his new VP will win. Personally I like what Obama stands for. The last thing we need is another Bush. The sad thing is alot of people around my age aren't even registered to vote. In my Sociology class the professor asked everyone who is registered to vote to raise their hands. Out of 42 people there where like 18 or so registered. That's terrible. But you can't force people to vote. But maybe if they where better educated on why they should vote they would.

Anyway awesome to hear that you attended that. Would make a great story to tell your daughter one day.

Take care,

Rob

It's nice to see a celebrity get involved because they care about the future of this great country of ours, and not to use it as a way to excelle their career.

Thanks Jessica

You were here in Denver and I didn't know it!?! Ahh man. Well, consider this a huge (if belated) welcome to Colorado. :) Sounds like you had a great time while here! Political affiliations aside, I'm very excited for this election. People in the county are finally caring about the political system and it's an amazing thing to see. Glad you enjoyed yourself, come back and visit often.

Way to be involved, Jessica! People need to be involved, and having a figure such as yourself to "promote the vote" is great for helping others do just that.
"Declare Yourself" is a great place to help people get educated on the candidates and the issues!
Here's a couple of kudos...
