Here's the run down on BEMF 3 so far. And yes, the festival isn't for another five months, but I'm compulsive and need to get some of the basics nailed down.
First, the festival dates are now set, May 31 through June 1. We have a evening kickoff performance on Thursday at "3 Shapes Aikido" in the North End of Boise from 7pm to 11pm. On Friday we have another evening performance for headliners at the Bouquet (cool club in Boise), from 9pm to Midnight. On Saturday, we start at 1pm at the El Korah Shrine for back to back performances until 7pm. Then we have another round of evening headliner performances at The Reef (another hip Boise club), from 9pm to Midnight. Finally, on Sunday, we start at 1pm at the El Korah again, and go until 7pm. On Monday, we'll have a performers luncheon at the Bittercreek Alehouse, at 1pm. That's the run down, about 20 hours of experimental music at four venues, all in the beautiful Boise down town area. I am still waiting final confirmation on the venues, but I don't foresee any problems.
Second, it gets better. If all goes as planned, Rainer Straschill from Germany will be coming to the festival to host his ground-breaking Kybermusik program. He will arrange a series of virtual internet performances at the clinic/performance room above Old Boise Guitar, on Saturday from 1pm to 5pm. In other words, Boise listeners will be able to see artists perform in the room, but also hear someone playing with them from another country. All this is pending, of course, on Rainer's ability to get here, etc.
Third, a little bit on genre this year. I am gathering, based on the flood of requests to play at the festival so far, that we will have a strong emphasis on free jazz, but also a strong presence of heavy hitters playing traditional instruments processed via the laptop computer - creative electronic music. I think this will be a good direction for the event this year, especially given the use of local clubs for evening venues. This year, we won't hear a lot of experimental ambient music or installation based performances, because I want to keep the audience on their toes and keep the program as lively as possible. Moreover, we'll still have a nice blend of styles, just slanted toward a few sub-genres.
Finally, I will be sending out a request for performer submissions mid this month. However, based on strong performers from the prior two festivals (2006 and 2007), and recommendations from my consultant in the experimental music community, I will be sending out a fair amount of pre-invites.
That's it for now. There is still a lot to do. I hope to see you all at the event!
Cheers,
