Event #13 Proves Lucky for Minnesota
"Minnesota" Jeff Proctor beat all the odds last night and rode a royal flush to the championship of the Cypress Poker League's 13th event. En route to his victory Jeff eliminated four players, including defending champion Bill Braun, scoring 23 points in the process and securing seventh place in the standings.
Membership Ebbs
The Cypress Poker League seems to be settling at attracting nine participants per game while currently supporting enough seating and accomodations for 24 players. Current membership totals 22 players. This illustrates the need to continue our efforts to spread the word about this unique method of playing by inviting your friends, family, and others looking to learn poker or advance their game. Please try to invite new players and the league will continue to support the growth with the capacity necessary to sustain your efforts. Don't forget the bonus points you will receive that not only qualify you for the Championship Event but increase the prize fund while providing you with a larger chip stack at the beginning of the event!
CPL Sends One of its Own to the World Series of Poker $5000 Bayou Classic
Bill Braun made the trip to Harrah's New Orleans, site of the WSOP $5k Bayou Classic, to chase the dream of becoming a full-time poker professional by participating in Friday's Mega Satellite. Taking first or seond place would have earned him an entry into the Main Event beginning on Monday May 18. Unfortunately, a bad beat ended those hopes with a 13th place finish.
This is how it happened: Seven players at the table. Blinds $150/$300. Bill was on the cut-off, a position before the dealer. Three folds and the action was on Bill who raised the bet to $1200 with bullets. After much consternation, the player on the button folded, in his words "the best hand". The small blind thoughfully rubbed his chin while examining the pot, Bill, or God knows what from behind mirrored sunglasses and called the raise. The big blind quickly folded.
The flop brought 5c-Jd-5s. The small blind studied a few moments and announced his $1500 bet. Bill responded by going all in. The small blind thought for a second before calling. The player on the dealer button exclaimed "God &$#% it, I did fold the best hand" to which another responded "if you folded pocket fives" and winked. Bill exposed his Ace's and the small blind flipped Cowboy's in the hole. The button announced that he had folded hooks. The flop brought 5d.
The river brought, you guessed it, a King, and the small blind won with King's full over Bill's 5's full.
Maybe next year.
Lesson learned: sunglasses give you good luck
