James and Phill’s Final Session

With the current chapter of the Lazy Lizards quickly coming to a close, it’s a great pity we’ve not had the opportunity to record some of our more recent work. It would have been a delight to get more recent compositions – such as “I Know I Shouldn’t”, “Neverland”, “Greenwich Mean Time”, “Paper Planes” and “An Irish Mile High” down on tape, not to mention old favourites like “Hard Days for Dreamers” and “Mob of Buzzards” that have fallen through the cracks during previous studio adventures.

Unfortunately band recordings take their time, and with a month before our final gig, time is a commodity in short supply. However, it seemed a real shame to depart for Vietnam without a taking a final opportunity to record with our stalwart producer, Mr. Phill Ward of Smart Soutane and KTB (near) fame. With this in mind, Phill and I spent last weekend recording a song called “Set Sail Whilst The Ship Still Floats”.

Lyrically and musically, I feel this song captures something of what the music the Lazy Lizards have been making is all about – a marriage of Afropop with a folky English sound. I hope you enjoy it!

Incidentally, James wrote the words and music to "Set Sail Whilst The Ship Still Floats", played Phill's expensive Spanish guitar and sang lead and backing vocals. Phill played the percussion and darbuka, Mike's old and now fretless electric bass and his cheap Spanish guitar with a pick-up, which allowed us to transform the guitar tone into electric sunlight using studio magic (who wants wild mercury these days anyway?). The song was arranged by James and Phill, and produced by Phill (James shouted "Yes" or "No" at important points from the comfort of the futon).
