Thursday, July 19, 2007

Hey everyone,

Every so often I tend to receive these types of hate emails from other Arab Muslims from all over the world.  The main problems with Arab Muslims these days is that they are not uniting on anything and it seems that all the problems are in fact coming from within!  However, I just wanted to share with you the email I received.  Please read the email sent below:

"Dear Ahmed,

While I was watching some comedy shows I wish I never saw, it just happened that I've seen your face.  Its very regretful that a guy named "Ahmad" starts mocking Muslims in front of the public and publicize it even more. You mentioned that some Muslims in Dubai "dance, drink, and have sex, but don't eat pork"? ( I don't know which Satan told you that's funny )
under any rate, that's sad to hear and listen to! it can bring a real Muslim to tears!
Actually you're right those guys suck, but you know what, you suck just as much! you are no different! who are you to mock them? huh? a student of alazhar or al medina almunawara? look back to yourself.
It seems that there are no topics, huh? so let it be the Muslims Tragedy the next target so people can turn this from a sad story into a funny story. And of course to have Non-Muslims commenting on some Muslims (who don't resemble the majority) that afterwards, which hurts more than a dagger in the stomach!

with people like you and the ones you mentioned, it seems this is not the right Islamic generation we are waiting for! what a disparage!

Naturally, you were the lamest and I was having a hard time laughing for every word that comes out of your mouth.
Man, go find another profession, cause this just doesn't work for you, you're not even funny, you are really hard to watch!

Aziz"

Man, guess this guy doesn't like my humor, huh?  Well it goes to show that you can't please everyone in the world.  However, everyone always stay passionate to what you love doing most.  For myself, it's Stand-up Comedy and I know I cannot please everyone however I'm very grateful to be able to witness my humor uniting many people from all around the world.

Best,

Ahmed

yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He hated you and the other comics so much that he (the message writer) stayed and watched every horrible minute of it. ??? People with his attitude get cancer. You could tell him that. Well, um, people with other attitudes get cancer, too, but you don't have to say that.

Ahmed- You are very funny and you must keep doing this because you love it. People like that is one reason I decided to do stand-up. Just to piss off Al queda and to send a message to them that I love my life and my country just the way it is, and they ain't gonna change nothin. I did 4 years in the Marine Corps and have worked a blue collar job every since then.I been at it almost 34 years and will retire in a few years. When I retire from that job I will proceed with my second career and hopefuly will open for you some day. I have met you(O.C. Pavillion) and I like you and I wish all Muslims were like you. You are a good man Ahmed, keep em laffin.

At the end of a comedy, there is a sense of well-being, that all has turned out as it should be, that the world, if not a better place, at least for the moment is a happy place.

At the end of a tragedy, there is a sense of discomfort and unhappiness, a recollection of tremendous suffering and despair, perhaps even regret that things had to happen as they did.

Comedy ends positively, and we leave the theater in an optimistic frame of mind with smiles on our faces. Tragedy ends negatively, and we leave the theater grimly, pondering the enigma and frailty of human existence.

Who cares what some guy who doesn't know funny when it bites him on the butt thinks. You keep doin what you love and those of us with good taste and a sense of humor will keep loving you and what you do.

if you can't laugh at yourself in life-then what's the purpose of living? I saw you live in Fort Lauderdale and bought the DVD and showed to all my family---they loved it--we all sat in a room and laughed together w/no arguments (a rarity for my family!)---Your comeday brings people together---ignore the haters!

Fuck'em! You're cool to me. One thing man has a problem doing is laugh about himself. One person can't make a joke without being threaten. Don't listen to that static. They have no right telling you what you can't joke about. If nobody ever laughed about themselves, humanity wouldn't have made it this far. Besides, what can they do to you. Its just an empty threat from a little coward in cyberspace. Who is he? Your father? "Oh your joke wasn't very funny," someone obviously never heard of satire and free expression. If he didn't like it, he could have change the channel like everyone else. If you need a bodyguard, let me know. I'll take a sword to anyone that tries to bully you over something so small as your right to free self-expression. You can count on that, homie.

And you're right when you say taht the muslim community don't look for unity. they only try to hold you back. Don t have a fast car it's not Islam. Don't dress in good lookin suit it's not islam. Don't tell jokes it s not islam. weel people who tell you this kind of lies are only jalouse
I m happy to see a muslim doin' his thing to the top. what ever. comedy, sport, business.

Don't feel bad about it, don't even give it another glance, because anybody doing anything can't please anybody. A mother of five can't please everybody with dinner, a CEO can't please every employee and client, a comedian can't please everybody who hears his/her jokes. It isn't that your jokes aren't funny, it's that some people just don't have the proper humor. But I do agree, it is mean how you make fun and tease Muslims, but it's also mean how some Muslim people don't even try to suck it up and admit that you DO have points and that you DO have truth behind your jokes! It cancels out, and in the end, all you are is hilarious. Pay no mind and take no heed.

Well....once again....it's like the conversation we had in Chicago. Some of these people live in their own world. In fact, I had an email from a "Muslim" that said he drinks, smokes and has sex....BUT.....he would never disgrace the Muslim prayer like I do in my videos...... Ya....go arguement. But like you said, you can't please everyone. The reality is that if it wasn't for Middle Eastern comics I don't think a lot of people would ever have any interest in finding out more about our culture. At least we're telling jokes and not blowing things up.

You know I love you man! See you soon,

It seems to me that this man has been so hurt by actual narrow minded and bigoted people that he's become too paranoid to try and listen to what anyone else has to say.

Your comedy can be provocative, and that can be a very good thing. But like you said, you can't please everyone.

To me, its more sad that there are people out there who have become so frightened of being marginalized and ostracized, they can't hear what others are trying to say when it doesn't match their hyper defensive mentality.

Just keep on doing what you do, Mr. Ahmed, and do it with the compassion for everyone I know you and your A of E compatriots have. You're an important part of the larger dialogue of civilizations.

It appears that the philosophical interpretation one puts ones faith in has a formidable affect on how one views and treats oneself & others; which in turn affects the global community.
Apparent when that interpretation leads to behavior such as Aziz's that generates hate, polarizing, denegrating, and harming people.
Also apparent when that interpretation leads one to behavior such as yours Ahmed Ahmed that promotes understanding & celebrating through laughter our differences, generating a mutual respect for others with contrasting beliefs/opinons, contributing to a culture of humanism.
I agree with Rob Zilla that what you do requires tremendous courage & with 'In A Subtile Dreame Disquiz'd' that you're an indispensable part of the larger dialogue of civilizations.
I wholehearted applaud your humanity as well as your talent. You make life better and I pray for your continued success, happiness, and wellbeing!

Nothing is so great that everyone out there likes it. Even God has his share of criticisms. This happens in many communities. Khalid Hussseni received many criticisms and even death threats from his own Afghans because of his book, "Kite Runner". Some of them didn't even read the book!

Everyone has their opinion and have the right to express it. Where do we draw the line when it is lacking common sense? Well you know you're funny, your fans know your're funny, you made a success out of being funny. Just because some people who don't have a sense of humor doesn't make you any less funny.

If Muslims can't laugh at themselves , we become a boring, dull, and an intolarent society. It's annoying when "religious" people pick and choose what "sins" they want to commit and what "sins" they don't want to touch. If somebody else does it then it's bad. I had two Muslim friends in Hawaii. I just picked out the sausage out of my pizza, one of my Muslim friends would drink alcohol a lot, and the other would have sex with different guys with all kinds of nationalities (her nickname was United Nations). They would point their fingers at me "WHAT you eat pork?? it makes no difference if you pick the sausage out!!" I'm like dammit I was hungry, and besides Allah said he is most forgiving and merciful!

Well people pick and choose, but it's odd that they would pick and choose "sins" then point fingers at someone else. If one finger is pointing at you then three is pointing right back at them!

Keep doing what you are doing. I'm sure you will receive many more ignorant emails like that. You guys are doing a great job in bringing Muslims together and Non Muslims who will understand us more.

Thanks a million. Keep doing what you're doing! Sometimes people say things out of jeolousy. Laughter is truly the best medicine! You guys are the best medication I have! :-)

Thank You Ahmed!!!
The dialogue you're creating is helping to bring Peace and Understanding to the world... I wish that Aziz would explain why he states, "Muslims Tragedy" and uses the term "sad story"... A big part of this worldwide misunderstanding has to do with.... 1. Language Barriers... 2. People Who Do Not Tell The Truth... 3. Lack of Information... 4. Us Against Them Mentality... People Are All The Same!!! We just have different ways of surviving... Some of us are dependent and some of us are independent. I don't understand what it's like living on the other side of the world under completely different circumstances... There's advantages and disadvantages to most everything in this world... Nothing seems to be 100%perfect... That doesn't mean we shouldn't communicate.... and that's where comedy comes in... You're helping to break down barriers... I LOVE YOU AHMED!!!

I think you are very funny. I think a person would go insane if they tried to please everyone or tried to make everyone laugh because everyone is so different. Some people do not even have a sense of humor in the first place or get so wrapped up that they cannot find any humor.
I am not Muslim and in fact, I don't really have a religion. I wasn't really brought up in one. I went to a congregational church sporadically. My dad who is Lebanese (100% American) was raised Catholic and he left the Church a long time ago. He has been reading books that question religions.
But what I take from your humor is that you are trying to unite people and I think that is very honorable and very much needed. Continue your work and I wish you much success!

Hello Ahmed,

It seems like Aziz is this typical muslim guy, who does what other people tell him to do and believe in whatever they believe. I actually pity these guys since they have never got the chance to experience something new for them selves and also makes them very inhibited. (sorry if my english sucks but I'm not from the states btw)

However, after a ling time in Sweden which was one of the most rasist coutries in the world. I've learned that instead of only growing in to your own culture and religion, you should embase others aswell. and that's what most of the western countries do nowadays. (noe of course I'm speaking of well taught people who's not neglected by the gouvernment).

And what I think is that since Swedes and Brittians and frensh poeple is doing is to embrace other cultures by travelling and hangin out with in ex middle easterners. Which too me leads to a conclution that they are trying to get us. But we're stuck in our own sh*thole and just cursing out everything else. So for me the combined humanity as a worldnation comes from the west to the east and not the other way around.

take care/Moe

It's tragic when people don't realize that laughter is sometimes the only thing that can keep people standing in a world that's only trying to drag them down. I have friends all over the world, and I cherish and respect each one of them (their culture, beliefs, dreams, etc). Some say love is the universal language, but I feel that sometimes laughter is the universal translator (when you can find shared laughter, it builds a bridge). Your work is wonderful! You make people laugh, but you also make them look at some of the issues that do not only affect one corner of the globe. We each have the opportunity to leave footprints on eternity. You are doing that remarkably (which is probably why some people feel threatened enough to comment negatively on it). Keep up the good work.

Aziz's letter actually gave me a chuckle, since he thinks he's very original. I'm arab and happen to think many things poked fun at about arabs are very funny, and when an arab does it, tastefully, it shows the rest of the world, that yes we have a sense of humor and just like any other culture, we're diverse and boy we have some issues. Some people might feel outed, as if no one has ever visited dubai and has never seen a mosque and bar existing next to each other. we need more comedy touching on the lives of arabs in America, we need to stop hiding, thinking that invisible protects us from racisim.
so, for anyone who has issues with arab comedians, get a life :)

Ahmed,

That guy probably has a bad attitude toward everything. I love your comedy and I think what you and the other Arab and Iranian comics are doing with the Axis of Evil and Arab American Comedy Tours is a good thing. It is healing and uniting people of all cultures, ethnicities and religions. Personally, I've been around Middle Easterners (both Arabs and Iranians) for the past twenty-six years. My brother-in-law is Iranian and some of my closest friends are Iranian, Saudi and Palistinian. And they all think you are a great and talented comedian. Don't ever let the ignorance of a few small minds make you doubt your talent or your ability to make people laugh and bring people closer together.
