Who Gives Kudos:

April 24, 2009 - Friday

hi everybody,

first things first.  i am writing to remind you that this sunday at tupelo music hall in NH  i am going to be playing songs from my new record "the near demise of the highwire dancer" and others.  http://www.tupelohall.com/

just recently, the record received a very nice (we think) review from holland. according to the google computer translation: "The harmonies of John Gorka and the aforementioned Kaplansky jump in the eye." so that's a good thing. also " Shin Dell Duvekot has undoubtedly decisive ingredients. Formerly wild Antje Duvekot's music is sometimes limited to the lovers of the narrative listening song."  so i think i am really going over in holland.

now. it's that time again where i let you in on my stream of consciousness. which i guess is all the rage these days, right?  to twitter, tweet, blabber, blogger on and on about your state-of-mind, whereabouts, etc, lol.  sorry nothing to laugh about, i just wanted to say "lol".  i never have before.  you see i'm really trying to get on board with the modern media age but to be honest it makes me feel like i am from another century*. you see i like things that grow (woods, meadows), things that talk to me specifically (aka real people), art, touch. maybe a few facts thrown in once in a while. for example my boyfriend and i were watching CNN last night. within 30 seconds we've caught on to the 'fact-part' of the reporting (namely, obama released bush-era torture memos) but what ensues then is basically jerry springer.  opinionated people yelling at each other (albeit more articulately than on JerrySpringer) and no news.  i mean, isnt CNN supposed to be the 'serious' news channel?  if i wanted propaganda-tainment, i would go to fox or msnbc (where rachel maddow's snippy self-righteousness drives me bonkers!).  for the record, i am left-leaning but whatever happened to straight news?  in my native country of germany, we have state-funded news channels that just give you the news straight up and it is ACTUALLY informative. here we have "welcome to CNN, we have been at the sight of where the miners were trapped for the last 24 hours now and we're telling you EVERYTHING that is happening which is currently NOTHING".  some argue that journalism isnt dying but rather it's becoming more democratic and diversified. you can now get more varied points of view from the internet than before.  but that's just the problem. they're only points of view. and too many of them. the modern media age requires you to be a keen detective about news outlet's hidden motives at best, or, at worst, it requires you to be numbed into submission by people fighting each other on tv while you're waiting to hear some news in the first place.  oh geeez. i'm sorry. i didnt mean to be a kill-joy calvinist about it all, but if you need me i'll be hanging out in the forest and mumbling to myself something about moral decay and how everything is better in germany :) lol

two last things i mean to tell you.

one- the talented chris obrien is opening my sunday show.

two- i am supporting a cause called INVIIBLE CHILDREN to rescue the 3,000 child soldiers in Uganda. In support of The Rescue I'm giving away a free download of my song  "Merry go round" on biggestlabelever.com.  Please visit the site and download my song as well as hundreds of other artists for FREE after registering and learning more.

cheers,

antje duvekot (formerly wild)

*of course technically i AM from another century since i am more than 9 years old, but you know what i mean...

Antje,..First, "LOL" over the Holland translation. Curled up in bed with a bug and that is the first laugh I had all day. Surely that quote should be at the top of your website...Secondly, I SO APPRECIATE you saying these things about the new social media. I feel in the minority on this but I am kind of frustrated with the idea that you have to be a technology wizard to make it as a musician these days. I am currently resisting Facebook even though everyone tells me "I "HAVE TO" get on there (because MySpace is "so 2008." Shit, it took me YEARS to give in to MySpace! I just GOT here! Now it's passe already? THat really bugs me. Can we just slow down a TAD?).. Now I'm really annoyed because Sonicbids just launched all these "updates" to their site with all these widgets like Twitter feeds, last.fm stats (whatever that is) and "Google buzz" or something so promoters can check your "blogosphere presence." They say promoters care about this. All I know is it slowed down the Sonicbids site like 1000x. All I want is to submit to play festivals. I don't want to track my freakin' blogosphere presence. If I don't have Twitters twittering everywhere, am i not a good songwriter? Does that not matter? Do promoters really care more about my Twitters than my songs?.. So the deal is that now it's not about having good songs, it's about how well you can exploit technology to become "viral." (Not to be ageist, but i think this trend IS sort of ageist as it also seems to me that this "technology trumps the actual art" is geared somewhat to 19-year-olds. I'm not exactly old, but I do remember life before texting.) I guess that's the free market and America and business, but I find it kind of dismaying. Marketing is one thing, but all this technology feels distancing to me. It seems to me that some great writers and singers who don't necessarily love to troll and mine the gadgets of "Web 2.0" are going to get lost...It seems from the above that you may share this frustration! ..Anybody else share these concerns?..Robyn..

Great blog, Antje.....I'll admit -- I trust Fox more than the Change News Network (formerly the Clinton News Network -- don't you think that's what CNN stands for) or any of the network stations, but I have problems with a 24 hour nothing but news station. First, there is not enough real news around for 24 hour coverage. Second, all the networks decide what is news and what isn't; there isn't such a thing as unbiased news coverage, partially because there are no unbiased people. Third, I feel sometimes the attention given to crime might motivate others to copycat or to try to be even more daring. (Not unlike the "Sportscenter factor", where athletes are trying to hit the home runs or shoot the great shots that Sportscenter highlights instead of playing the real game.)....Thanks for sharing, and hope you don't mind my giving my 2 cents worth. Hope to hear you sometime in Indy.....Jeff..

Hey Antje! Totally feel you about the American news...that's why we watch the CBC affiliate from over the border. Helps sort the wheat from the chaff...pardon the grammatical errors if any..I'm typing while nursing the baby. Kudos on the narrative singer/songwriters kicking ass in Europe and at home...
