this is my first message from addis.
factoids...
- four seasons in a day...night's like winter, mornings like spring, midday like summer and late afternoons like spring...
- have had herds of sheep run up on me from behind walking down the streets...
- have smelled "foreign" smells that i cannot identify
- have been trying to check email for three days...
- have been adjusting to slower than average dialup internet when i do get on....
- have been treated very well..
- have been eating great food
- had my first rehearsal today and it's going to be cool...
- will be going out like a cover band on the first gig (motown....)
- have touched a donkey
- do live on an unpaved road
- have seen intense poverty
- am making major life adjustments...
- do miss mtv...
all and all things are pretty interesting and amazing all at the same time.
the club that i am playing at is called harlem jazz...it is the first establishment when you leave the airport. the club is very nice and jordana, who is the owner, has been very cool.
today is the first day that i feel comfortable with the city. i took a taxi to my rehearsal which was an adventure to say the least. i feel like i live in the hood...dirt road...mad stray dogs that howl like crazy....all night long....
the music is so off the chains here...they have this style whereby there is a guy who plays the drum, one who plays this traditional guitar, and a singer. they freestyle about whatever they see. everybody here thinks i'm ethiopian...i am blending well...
i haven't got settled yet to start working on music just yet...writing and recording...but i have met some great producers and musicians (abegaz....) tight...
tonight, i am going to a jam session at a place called the coffee house...
well...all and all i am surviving and feel like i will come back a changed man....
i send you all my love and wellness.
check you soon.
