Hi guys,

pre-production is wrapping up and we’re about to go into Hothouse Studios to start work on album number four. In fact, time has been booked, so there’s no backing out now (well, not without some serious weasling).

Here’s another update on a few of the tunes that are going to be recorded for the new album.

All is Forgiven - this is one of the most complex songs we’ve ever done. It’s grand and orchestral. It’s going to be very interesting to see where this one takes us. It’s a possible album opener, sweeping and dramatic and damned if you can really pick where it’s gonna go. OK, maybe you can, but it twists my mind.

Someone Else to Blame - a classic country tune. Probably our first song with a key change - dopn’t worry we haven’t gone all Whitney/Mariah just yet. The basis of this was written while wasting time at our manager’s house in Sydney on one of the last couple of tours up there.

Without Wires - a slow builder. Likely to feature guest vocalists singing a line at a time.
"And it sticks in my mind, you said we’d all be fine". I think this one is gonna turn out swell, lotsa stuff coming in and out over a solid base.

Black and Blue - Another tune that has finally been pushed close to a state that’s worthy to take its place on an album. It’s one that shifts in tempo and is again high on drama. One with real atmosphere.

The Same Mistake - Hard to explain. More on the indie rock end of the Fourth Floor spectrum really. "You’ve gone and made the same mistake..."

Audrey is Sad - A torch song. Sounds like you’ve heard it before but of course you haven’t. Rhys pictures this one in a smoky bar.

Whole Lot Comes Alive - One that we’re working hard to try to find the best way to play it. Could be done in a few different ways. It rolls along and is quite upbeat. Started out kinda Wilco-esque but has evolved unconsciously into resembling Kings of Leon (with less mangled singing)...wait to see whether we manage to pull this one off.

So there’s round two and comprises most of the remaining tunes that will make up album four. We’re really working hard on it at the moment and should be rather good...ahem, if I do happen to say so myself. Any questions?

Thats a brilliant update Dan... I really admire you guys, album number 4.. how quickly it all seems to come around... and the music is brilliant as always...

I'd like to know how long youve booked the studio for and how many songs you will record? i presume you make the decision later as to what makes it to the album, but do the rest eventaully get released too?

G'day Anthony,

we have two days booked. We were looking at three and maybe a fourth but we think we can pull off doing what we need to in two. We'll do drums for 11 tracks, with a few others not needing live drums (no drum kit, or programmed drums).

Of course, if we need a third day we'll book it.

So we'll have 13-15 tracks all up, the rest will get released as B-sides or consigned to the scrap heap or left in cryogenic storage to be revived in time for number 5.

And oh my, time does fly.

Thanks for that Dan. thats amazing! I would have thought it would take longer. Was that the case with the other albums? the production sounds so lush. How do u fit it all in? would love to be a fly on the wall, but alas i presume yr recording in melb.
Well as they say, break a leg... and cant wait to hear the results...

If all goes well, everyone will get to hear this album by the middle of this year. So it won't be one that sits around in the can for a year waiting to be marketed...

As for the scrapheap...we'll see how they go but most will come out on the album or b-sides at very least.
