1. Can you tell us something more about yourself? Just tell us what you want to tell...
I enjoy long walks on the beach and cozy evenings by the fireplace.
2. In the past you released music onder the name of Lithium. Why did you decide to release albums under your real name afterwards? Does the lithium project belong to the past or is it just sleeping? Whats the difference between the Gustaf Hildebrand albums and the Lithium album? Is it just the name that makes the difference or is there more?
After the Lithivm album was released I honestly got really tired of it, and I felt that I had much more freedom to do what I want under something that had my own name on it. Yes, Lithivm has been put on ice for the foreseeable future. After several years of keeping silent with Lithivm I did however do a first-and-last resurrection performance last week with the project in Vilnius, Lithuania which I did enjoy. Im not saying that I wont record music that sounds like Lithivm in the future, but if I do so itll probably be under my own name.
3. You are in my dark ambient top 3 together with Lustmord and Raison dÊtre. It may be coincidence, but if I would compare your music to the music of other artists, I would drop those two names: Lustmord and Raison dÊtre. Can you agree with this?
Thanks! I really enjoy these two artists as well so its certainly flattering to be compared to them.
4. Are you influenced by them or are their other influences?
Lots of stuff influences me, be it music or other artforms. To be honest, I cant really put a finger on a specific subject that has influenced me more than others. Astronomy, perhaps?
5. Where do you find your inspiration? Is there a relation between Scandinavian nature and climate and your music?
I guess theres a relation to a certain point, but I wouldnt say that the climate is what drives me to record music.
6. I wonder if its possible to make music that is still more dark than yours. Its really darker than dark. How do you explain this preference to make such dark, haunting and scary music?
I really enjoy the suggestive (and admittedly dark) atmosphere of it. Ive always liked music where everything isnt spelled out for you, but leaves some room for imagination, and I think that this kind of music is suited perfectly for that.
7. What is your own favourite music to listen to?
That depends entirely on what mood Im in. Ive been listening a lot to Sisters of Mercy lately, good stuff. I have a pretty schizophrenic taste in music, though. I dont restrict myself to any genre in particular.
8. The metal sounds on Primordial Resonance, where do they come from? Are they sampled? From what source? Or did you generate them yourself with pieces of metal and record them?
I recorded them myself, I used an old sheet of tin plate that I manhandled.
9. Same question for the singing monks onRuins Of A Failed Utopia. Where do they come from?
Some sample compilation of choirs if I remember correctly.
10. Starscape, the first album under your own name seems to be sold out. Arent there plans to release it again?
I actually dont know at the moment, but I guess its not impossible. If people still want it, that is.
11. Whats your opinion about performing live? Dark ambient is not really live music. Can you add something to the experience of listening to the music at home by performing it live? Do you use movies or images?
This kind of music is often heavily computer-based and pre-recorded which often makes it difficult to make much of it live. I like to use at least some sort of analogue piece of equipment, be it pieces of metal to bang on or a synth or some string instrument or whatever. I do use a backdrop video when I perform live, as I like to add a nice visual element to the performance.
12. Are you busy with making new music for the moment? Are there plans for a new album?
Yes, Im currently in the process of recording new material for another full-length release, Im very satisfied with it so far actually. As it looks now it will be a bit different from previous releases, so stay tuned.
