I happened upon an online chat session with Brian Wilson a while back, so I figured I'd throw out a question or two.  I asked him about an interview where he said he once worked out harmony arrangements while playing a fast "boogie woogie" on the piano and in a different key. I wanted to know how he was doing that (completely different chord progression, different key, different song, etc.)?  Brian said "Well, I got into the key of C, then went to E... and it got better. I stayed there til the whole thing got written." How often do you get to pick the brain of a musical genius?

You continue to impress me with your fine taste in music. You seem influenced by many of the same musicians I am, whether they're guitarists or not. However, I didn't see Tom Waits on your list. Perhaps it's time you give him another chance. I could listen to "Pet Sounds" forever. How'd he do that?

Your New Friend,
James

Yes indeed, Tom Waits, what an incredible artist. I was just listening to his "Mule Variations" and "Rain Dogs" albums. I love the song "House Where Nobody Lives". Incidentally, I heard "Downtown Train" on the radio the other day; unfortunately, it was the cover version, not the original. You know, now that you mention Tom Waits, I'm reminded of other artists I've forgotten to include on the ole' influences list like Captain Beefheart, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and Louis Armstrong.
