.. c.." " name=Keywords>Martial Canterel's Refuge Underneath is the newest release on NY's Wierd Records. This is essentially a generous reissue of tracks, on CD for the first time, that were originally on ridiculously limited, European cassettes and vinyl from the last five years or so. Consider the originals nonexistent. Also, this is just a high-quality primer for a forthcoming album of brand new material coming later this year.
First thing that is essential to mention: As insular as coldwave is supposed to be, Martial Canterel (and all of Sean McBride's projects) manages to grab the listener immediately with its "realness," which is funny to consider since its also a highly detailed, modern improvement on a style of the past. You will twist your brain in disbelief that this is contemporary stuff and not an unearthed lost gem! Without getting into analog synthesizer geek-out mode, McBride uses full-on genuine synths and equipment. Plus he manipulates his keyboards the old-fashioned way and plays them live with synthesized sounds/beats of his own design -- no samplers and no laptops. The devotion and musicality really comes through, and any thoughts of this sounding like weak, typical new wave/synth should leave your mind. Which leads me to my main point: Each time we play this record in the store every Tom, Dick and Hildegard starts asking about it and buys it. WTF? "Dude, only I'M supposed to understand this stuff, maaaaaan!"
Stylistically, this is for all who secretly long for an artist that combines the cold intensity of Death in June or Joy Division, or even prime Clan of Xymox, with the able synth manipulations of Suicide meets OMD, DAF/Liaisons Dangereuses and Esplendor Geometrico. A minority after all, but as we've been seeing in the shop, even if you are clueless about this type of music, its genuineness will grab you. Ultra-highly recommended. Top 10 of the year material!
