So, tribute bands... not something I would normally go to, although I've come to the conclusion over the last few years that it's ok if the band no longer exist. And let's face it, you're not going to be able to see the real Marc Bolan any time soon!

Apparently, T-Rextasy are the only T-Rex tribute band to be authorized by the controllers of Bolan's music catalogue. They've been going for about 15 years now and it shows in their professionalism and ability.

The show at The Palace consisted of 2 approximate hour long sets, with a 20 minute break in the middle. Just enough time for the audience to get a beer, and the band to have a quick costume change!

If you're into T-Rex then you wouldn't be disappointed with this show. They played all the obvious favourites including Ride a White Swan, Children of the Revolution, Telegram Sam, Get It On, Jeepster, Solid Gold Easy Action, I Love to Boogie, 20th Century Boy, Metal Garu... I could go on, but I think you get the picture.

Both sets were very tight and professional, and visually they make every effort to keep the looks of the original musicians, so if you allow yourself to suspend your belief for a couple of hours, you could have a really good evening.

Sometimes it's nice to go for an evening out without any pretension or judgement, and just allow yourself to have fun, and this to me is what the T-Rextasy gig was all about. I had a really fun evening and am glad I went along.

It's all too easy to be sniffy and snobby about trib' bands. There are some genuinely great acts doing the rounds Bootleg Beatles and The Small Fakers for example, are full of fluent musicians giving the opportunity to get as close to the original experience as possible..

Keep an eye out for Southend's own T Rex tribute band Too Rex, well worth a watch..I've seen them a couple of times (gigged with them once), and for my earth pounds possibly even have the edge over T Rextasy
