Some things I have come to know to be true:
If there is the slightest possibility something can go wrong, it will.
None of us are ever where we'd like to be. Some few get to a place where they can accept their circumstances; the rest of us struggle against the tide our whole lives.
If you give your heart to another human being, they will break it. No exceptions.
"Fairness" is an illusion used as a plea by those who have nothing left.
Comparing apples to oranges is only absurd until you get to the molecular level.
"Justice" is usually defined by those with the power to deny it.
Youth really is wasted on the young.
The feeling of being "in love" is a chemical-induced state designed to ensure the perpetuation of the species.
We are all constantly faced with the choice between what is right and what is convenient. We usually choose wrong.
"Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from
the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent
disinclination to do so." --Douglas Adams
Anyone who would give up a little liberty to gain security deserves neither and loses both. --Benjamin Franklin
The only easy day was yesterday. --U.S. Navy SEAL motto
Anyone capable of convincing people to elect him President should under no circumstances be allowed to do the job. --Douglas Adams
The wonderful thing about democracy is that everyone gets a say. The problem with democracy is that everyone gets a say.
Flowers smell sweetest when they are dying.
Aiming high gets you shot.
It is a quirk of the human condition that those things that are the worst for us are the very things we desire most. Conversely, those things that are good for us are the most abhorrent. This is why children will play with fire but will not eat their vegetables. This is also why people will go to casinos, strip clubs and bars, but not to church.
Humans are very good at compartmentalizing their lives. This sometimes leads to a lack of transfer between one area and another. For example, a man who patiently tutors a child in math or history, but has no patience with his family. This also leads to glaring moments of hypocrisy. For example, someone who goes out drinking Saturday night and then sings in a church choir on Sunday morning. They may not realize the problem, as a compartmentalized life seems like multiple lives to the subject.
Our society has placed too great an emphasis on cultivating leadership qualities in everyone. If everyone tries to lead, we will never get anywhere. Someone must follow in order for progress to be made. To summarize: if you're leading and no one's following, you're just taking a walk.
