This is a "press release" if you will, about the podcast, now that we, Dan Slavin & Steve Bremner have developed some momentum with it, and have hit our stride, know what we're doing and how we want to do it. We have tried a few different things and have LOTS more topic ideas and show formats we're going to do in the foreseeable future (like the sacred cow barbecue series we're currently engaged in). If you've checked out our show and have been blessed, encouraged, challenged, or even got mad at us after listening to any of them, then you will continue to be and I'm sure stretched some more with the next few topics and angles we're going to take on certain issues.
"Fire On Your Head" is not a place where two guys just take turns preaching a sermon to you. It's a discussion for the generation that would rather hang out and talk about spiritual issues more than just having another service (we've checked, and our parents don't really listen much because it's "more for people of our generation"). We don't come on there to discuss topics, but specifically gray areas where there isn't a specific conclusion to be reached in the end. But of course, we do anticipate doing some Bible-study type of subjects that burn in us, and have several sacred cow barbecues forthcoming. And kill sacred cows.
I recently installed a Google Map in our podbean site (that hosts all our mp3 files), and saw how many more people are listening to us than we thought--and at the time of writing this, our episode "Does God Really Kill Kittens Every Time You Masturbate?" having over 300 unique hits! I thus decided it's worth my while to promote the podcast as much as I'm capable of, and asking any of you who want to to help in anyway you'd like, but I'll get to that in a moment.
Check out some quick testimonies that might encourage you to start one of your own (that's IF you have something worthwhile to say!), or at least help us to get ours out there:
* When I visited Leeuwarden, Netherlands last September, fellow missionary Francine Heiks named someone from Canada and asked me if I recognized the name (which I did not at the time), and proceeded to tell me that this person had listened to her message on Forgiveness on our podcast that I had posted, and was mightily impacted by it. This sister had done a Google search to find out how to contact Francine, and wrote her an e-mail and had a few exchanges and let Francine know how much it helped her in a positive way towards freedom with some issues of bitterness.
* Recently Dan and I were talking over the phone, and he told me he ran into old friends of his in Michigan. They apparently proceeded to tell him that they had Google searched for his name on the internet to find out where he was and what he was doing these days, they came across our podcast, and listened to Episode 8: What is True Revival?, which we did back in the summer time. These guys were backslidden Christians but listened to it and got convicted and challenged and consequently got their lives right with God and made sure to tell Dan about how they discovered the podcast--so that he and I would know it reaches people we don't even know about.
Hearing that kind of stuff stokes my flames and makes me even more humbled about how we seek the face of God in prayer before deciding what we want to cover in each episode. Now, of course our audience is small compared to the fact really well-known ministries put their podcasts out there. I believe it's mostly people who know us personally who are listening in to us. But, after hearing testimonies like those, and getting feedback once in a while from random strangers who stumbled-across us, I'm stoked about "marketing" ourselves in all the places on the internet I can without being salesman-like (I actually hate the word 'marketing' I just used, but I know you know what I meant by using it).
So here are ways you could help in promoting us or helping people come across us if you'd like to:
1) Linking to us
If you have a blog, or some kind of ministry website, please consider putting a link to FIRE Nederland@ Podbean.com, which is our podcast feed site with everything on it-including messages from FIRE Nederland/Holland summer schools in recent years. Consider linking to this blogspot I've started , which contains embedded media players for each Fire On You Head show (but not the summer school preachings). Each of these links have subscription buttons so people could subscribe to the podcast just like on the right-hand top column if this blog.
Other links include our channel onOdeo, Wordpress blog (which like the blogspot version contains embedded media for ONLY the Fire On Your Head show episodes) Linking to us does NOT mean your blog readers will come over to our site necessarily and start listening to us or becoming our audience--which would still be cool--BUT search engines have "bots" and "spiders" that find that the more times we're linked to online by other sites, the higher our podcast will rank in search engines like Google and Yahoo. This means it becomes easier for other people to find us from searching for various topics that are tagged in our shows, enabling us to have more potential exposure to random checker-outers.
So please give some thought to the idea of linking to our podcast using any of those links.
2) Subscribing to us.
You don't even have to listen to our podcast or keep caught up with us, but there are mechanisms in place for some Podcatcher software like iTunes, that help rank podcasts based on how many times they're subscribed to, and doing so will greatly increase our chances of ranking higher and higher in some directories and increase our potential exposure to the right audience our podcast is geared for.
Don't know how to use iTunes? No problem, it's a free download-able media player, and all you have to do is click on the corresponding subscribe button to the right which will automatically open the program if you have it on your computer, and if not it will help you install it if you'd like.
Don't use iTunes or you don't prefer it? No problem, the buttons on the left of this blog and other links can help you open, listen to and subscribe to us in Zune--Microsoft's answer to Apple's iTunes/iPod--and Zencast, the organizer and media player for the Zen mp3 player. As of yet, Zune Market Place and the Zen podcast directory are taking their jolly time reviewing us after many weeks, and apparently are understaffed in reviewing all the podcasts that get submitted, because they only in recent times decided to compete with iTunes who've dominated for years already--and iTunes got back to me the same day. So of course, no surprise since Apple owns the competition when it comes to this sort of stuff. But if you have those software programs and would rather use them, the buttons above can do that for you.
Right now, iTunes is the most podcast-friendly media player and their online store has the largest FREE podcast directory as of yet with over 25,000 free podcasts listed. You might find the podcasts of church ministries you prefer and other things you didn't know you could find there for free. Give it a check-out.
NOTE: Subscribing to us is actually better than playing us on any of the sites or one-click play options, as you download the files directly to your computer using any of the listed podcatchers--or other ones you prefer--and this saves us bandwidth on the site we host our files on.
3) Voting For Us
The vote buttons right hand near all the subscribe buttons of our blogs and site feed is for a site called "Vital Podcasts". It's one of the many many podcast and/or blog directories we've submitted our show to, and has a voting mechanism in place where the more votes a feed receives, the higher ranking it receives, and as follows, the more potential exposure on their site and even attention drawn to it. In other words, increased visibility--AND it doesn't even make your browser open a new window. So PLEASE click on it every time you visit one of those sites blog, because you can vote for us once per day, and they add up, helping us gain more potential visibility.
Other creative things you could consider doing:
If you're on "Digg.com", then "digg" our podcast or enter individual episode page links from any of the links above I've provided. It's ok, each link, blog, etc... all have re-direct links throughout them to lead back to our original Podbean page if someone really wants to check us out. If you use "StumbleUpon" on your browser, than you could consider giving us a thumbs up on your browser bar, so as to enable others of like-mind to stumble upon us when "channel surfing" the internet.
Any creative way you have in mind that you'd like to use to help spread the mp3s we've put on there and the "Fire On Your Head" show we do, would be greatly appreciated and encouraged by us, but just as or more importantly: you never know who could come across those in the information super highway in the years to come and be affected positively by any of them towards the kingdom of God
In closing:
We have a feedback e-mail address at fireonyourhed@gmail.com (the address that spells it "head" apparently was already taken), for show topics we may or may not consider doing, or questions, insults, or positive feedback you may want to contribute that could help us out or give us something entertaining to use. Or if you want to just tell Dan you're in love with him, you can e-mail that address as well since we both check it. Well OK, I originally made that e-mail address so I had something to submit to various podcast directories besides my personal one, but it still works for those purposes listed above.
I (Steve) have had voicemail on my Skype with the user name "Machospice" where you should be able to call me even if you're not on my contact list, and leave voicemails for us if you'd like. I make no promises we use each one we get, but if it's creative, we probably will use it somewhere in the show.
Again, we're not specifically asking you to listen to us if we're not your cup of tea, but considering helping link to us for anyone in your sphere of influence for whom this might just hit the spot.
Thank you so much, and God bless.
On with the Jesus Revolution!
