Kjell Remstedt has written a wonderful review of the CD which I'm reprinting here:
LUCKY GIRLDazzling debut, deliciously doneIt is not often that a blues album will give you such a jolt as this one does. "Breathing new life into old standards" usually rings a warning signal in my head that some serious musical derailment is imminent. NOT SO. Here we have a collection of songs treated with ingenuity, clarity and creative skill that translates into listeners delight and some serious foottapping/dancing depending on whatever is at hand.
Karen Lovely's voice has enough clout to shout with the best in the genre but also the finesse and sophistication that allows her to emulate a cocky mischievous Willa Mae Thornton as in "I'm a little mixed up" or the husky intimacy of an Etta James in the beautiful "Too little too late" Each song is played respectfully but here and there with a harmonic twist that adds to the listening experience.
There's some very competent harp playing and some really excellent guitar work here but you'll want to spin the album a couple of times before you realize just how good. There's also a brass section that lets its jazzy nocturnal fluidity solidify into some sweet Atlantic honking. The mix has a lot of headroom so that especially for a blues record we're getting excellent definition
All in all you've got to hear it to believe it. It's a knock-out. I'm telling you. And if this isn't the perfect x-mas new years present for your favourite music buff then I don't know what is.
