Iran may have just executed the third child offender of the year. We are still waiting to hear. This case however is more than just that. Sina Paymard simply couldn't afford his life.Sina was profiled in the recent Amnesty International report on Iran and Child Offenders. Last year, 2 weeks after his 18th birthday, he was taken to the gallows to be hung for a murder he committed when he was 16, on drugs and suffering from bipolar disorder. The man he killed was the man he went to buy cannibis from at a park in Tehran. While on the gallows, with the rope around his neck, Sina made his last request. He requested to be able to play the ney, a kind of flute. Sina is a musician. When he played the ney, the family of the victim was so moved that they said they would accept the payment of diyeh (blood money) instead of having him executed and he was saved from that execution. Since then, Sina's family have been unable to raise the more than $160,000 (USD) demanded by the faily of the victim.Earlier today Amnesty International heard that Sina was again within hours of being executed. We have heard nothing since.I spoke on CBC Newsworld this afternoon about this:YouTube ClipLet us all hope that we find good news in the morning.Aubrey.
