Parading From Heavens Descent
Rise Of Caligula

THE REVIEW:

Frantic and abrasive grind meets the placid tranquility of Roger Gilmour. As soon as I heard “Modesto”, California’s Rise of Caligula had some new material out, I immediately hit their MySpace up to hear for myself. I was elaborately taken back to a time where fashion and other materialistic aesthetics weren’t even an afterthought. It was all about the music. There was no room to sacrifice the integrity of the work with some fad-passing trend that withers in the tests of time. This was of course, before 2000 and before the onslaught of heavy fashion based metalcore ran rampant throughout the hardcore scene. “Parading From Heaven’s Descent” is rendered genre-less like a slice of Converge with a dollop of Phobia on top, maybe some Pink Floyd sprinkled throughout.
Before I go through the album, I want to note that this album is heavy on more than one level. It reflects the light and darkness in life, summoning all of the true horror of existence – failure, loneliness, sickness, loss and depression. It drives home the fact that life is a force to be reckoned with, you can try and you can fail. It’s hard to find new music, and by new I mean different. The interesting artwork of “Parading From Heaven’s Descent” mirrors the emotion, the listless neutrality in the composition it connects with the album. “Parading From Heaven’s Descent” struck a personal chord with me, resonating echoes of despair. The album opens with ‘Slums’ a droned down post rock song, creating the atmosphere of a barren wasteland, desolate and deprived. From the gut wrenching hardcore choruses to schizophrenic grind battles with imprisoning atmospheric interludes to anchor the grind madness, I have never heard anything this modern yet so classy and uncompromising. It could have taken so many wrong turns but stays the innovative course, breathing fire into every track, everything eludes endlessly throughout the album. Tremendous rhythm sections tossed with unpredictable structures; the experience is all the more intense when reading vocalist George’s eloquently written lyrics that harkens deep the soul suppressed realities and unlit corners of life we all rather leave unspoken. His screams cocktailed with maniacal guitar riffs tear at the heartstrings and by the end of the album – clocking in at over 8 minutes; “Calendar Year” is nearly chasing perfection with reverse engineered polar opposite instrumental spectrums. Some of my favorite tracks are “Choke” which is a stockpile of guitar-driven tech breakdowns that sound like nothing I’ve ever heard before. “Severed From The Mother Stone” is a damaging and fascinating blend of complicated, calculated and well thought out material delivering yet another one of the best-kept underground secrets. And of course, the catchy death metal spirited “Swans on Colossus” that is just as cool as it sounds.
At its core “Parading From Heaven’s Descent” is a compelling fixture in modern metal. Threading as it enthralls its listeners into the darkest and loneliest paths of life. Captivating and brutal all in one breath, it’s easy to say that Rise of Caligula speaks as one of the loudest voices in underground metal. Nihilistic in theory and apocalyptic in nature, this is the answer to the flashy metal bands. This is about as legit as it gets.
