Current mood:  blah
Category: Blogging
No, this isn't another blog about Barack, as much as I'm pleased to see him voted in as President, and leader of the so called free world.

Been pretty slack on the Blogging front lately, for numerous reasons, The chief one being , that I've been in the studio writing lots of new tracks- not all for Mooli I hasten to add.

I have a new manager, who is really well connected especially in America, and he's been putting together some great co - writes with people having a lot of success there and Internationally.

I've been getting together with some cool new co- writers, and writing for other artists, in different genres, and I've got to say, I'm enjoying it immensely. No playing involved on my part, just writing the actual songs.

Some of the people I'm working with have some great tracks under their belt, with US artists like Aretha Franklin, kanye West, Pussycat Dolls, John Legend and Jordin Sparks to name but a few, and I've been doing what's known in the industry as ' top lines'. Basically writing the song to their tracks. It's something I've had success doing over many years and I love it, and it's a different form of expression to composing the music.

I have to admit it can be emotionally draining though, going back over past experiences, and pouring your heart out, time and time again. I find I get more tired, and my mood is subject to change depending on what I'm talking about in the song. It's almost like being an actor, and having to go into character, and taking your character home with you.

I guess it's also like therapy in a way, which is a good thing, apparently, lol. Anyway I am really happy with the songs I've written. One called ' Empty ' and another called ' set it all aside' that I especially love, and the feedback so far has been really positive, so we'll see what happens.

With those sort of songs, you've just got to let go of them, once you've written them, and let them have a life of their own. Can't be too precious about them really, as much as you love them .

In the past few months I've been fortunate enough to have Companies like Disney wanting songs I've written, and I have now got three songs coming out on movies, which is something I've wanted for a while. It's like buses- you wait so long for one, then 2 or 3 turn up at the same time, near enough. Of course, the wait for the royalties is another story, lol.

I think anyone who reads these blogs knows by now that ' One Design' is on a film soundtrack. The film is called Gnaw. It's a British film, and I see that there is a link to the trailer for the movie. I have no idea when it's coming out, but assume it will be sometime in the new year. All I know is that One design is featured in a big love scene.

Here is the link, if you're not feeling too squeamish! Haha

Hi Ben,

Good to hear that you are keeping busy and doing so well.

Surely you can't want the pleasure of creating and expect to get paid for it??? :-)

The royalties in the post must be the most overworked line in the history of music, but I expect you will open a letter one day and discover you are not only famous, but rich with it too. I think it's inevitable now.

I think you write great mellow music so don't forget to compose the odd tune along the way will you?

All the best

John

Hey John, how are ya?

Thanks very much mate. I will definitely be writing some more tunes- have quite a few for the next album. It's just a matter of sorting out the recording of them, and deciding who will be singing what, cos the next album will feature a few different guest vocalists.

Yes it certainly feels good to be busy at the moment, and i'm enjoying working with the ' new' people. A lot of great stuff has been happening in the past few months, and I certainly hope that continues into 2009!

Yes the wait for royalties of any kind, performance, writing, production etc is painful to be honest. Just trying to get a statement is a mission sometimes..

For instance, I think so far I've had one Production royalty statement from EMI, from stuff I did with an artist at least 3 years ago, that has been on general release, and is still on sale via itunes etc.

It's a pain in the arse trying to chase all this up. Hopefully now there is new management, and a closer ties with a publisher, my life will be a bit easier. I certainly hope so, cos i just want to get on with being creative really.

All the best to you too .

Ben :)
