Review: Vindicator at Eclipse
May 10, 2009
I
was running late, but I thought I was going to make it to the show in
time to see Vindicator. Instead, I got distracted by the flashing
lights surrounding the giant pig with a top hat at nearby Porky’s
Diner. I drove right past Eclipse Records.
By the time I looped
around, got parked and walked in, Vindicator were nearly finished. They
were clearly thrashing like madmen. Even though the crowd was sparse,
90% of the people there were in a circle pit. Vindicator’s singer even
stepped off stage to join them. The dude cuts one hell of a circle pit.
He looked like DRI’s skanker man logo come to life. Usually, circle
pits are barely controlled chaos. His version looked like a finely
tuned instrument of thrash, just as crucial to the music as the drums,
guitar and bass.
He effortlessly hopped back onto stage to wrap
up the set with the song “Humanarchy,” which is one of the strongest
examples of modern thrash I’ve heard. It’s pure and it’s powerful. It
made me kick myself that I hadn’t gotten there sooner.
If you
ever get the chance to see Vindicator, don’t let flashing lights or
top-hatted pigs stand in your way. Just get there and prepare to thrash.
Vindicator played at Eclipse Records in St. Paul, MN, on 05/08/09.
