Crop Circle in Vancouver Stumps Locals, Astounds Music Lovers
BY CRISLANA RAFAEL – KWANTLEN PARK SECONDARY, SURREY BC | JUN 1, 2009
Named after the famous occurrence puzzling crop farmers and extraterrestrial enthusiasts worldwide, Vancouver's own Crop Circle has already become a hometown phenomenon. In just four years, the band’s list of accomplishments has grown to include securing a place on the 2002 Vancouver Seeds CD; being handpicked to tour Western Canada as part of Budweiser’s True Music program; and opening for artists like ZZ Top, Wide Mouth Mason and Bif Naked.
However, nothing compares to the feat of completing their first full-length album,Come Inside, in a mere thirteen days! “It wasn’t so much a rush,” explains Crop Circle drummer Ben Darbey. “We were just prepared.” Guitarist Brian Garbet elaborates: “We were paying for studio time ourselves, so we didn’t have the luxury of taking our time. For continuity purposes, we wanted the album recorded in one shot and not spread out a few songs at a time over several months. We intentionally had no editor on the project so you could actually hear the nuance of our performance.”
Using a full mixing board as opposed to a direct computer, Crop Circle took the old-school approach to both production and their music. “Some of our biggest influences are older rock bands. For us, their recording process was also an inspiration,” explains Brian. “We chose to do the record as close to ‘live off the floor’ as we could and still have a modern sounding CD.”
Regardless of the method, Crop Circle’s Come Inside successfully combines both the old and new sounds of rock ‘n’ roll. Pay attention, Vancouver ‘cause Crop Circle sightings won’t disappear anytime soon!
