I felt really compelled to review this joint and I aint blogged in a minute, but since the controversy of the albums title or untitle pulled me into debate way back .... I had to speak up, I reserved judgment on the albums concept until it's release so i was eager to let people know how I felt about this disc, plus I always felt Nas, but I know you gotta be careful.....Nas gotta way of sucker punching a nigga (pun) swag. it's hard to compare Nas to hiphop as a whole because he's always been creatively ahead of the curve, leaving us to criticize his choice of production and his limited musical or melodic flexiability....but emcees know Nas is a human WMD and all he needs is 1 mic...... The new Nas album is a lesson in hardcore hiphop,(yung spitter's pleeze take notes) his poetical eloquence is destine to spark some intellectual discourse, Like Immortal Technique & The Roots CD's earlier this year ....the social commentary in this album provokes thought. It start's of with a sick piano riff (no drums) and nas just reminding us why he's one of the most prolific word weavers ever. In short the album starts hard, then drops into some crazy ill familiar soul sample with a old school stylistic sung hook..... it's tight, and for the most part the focus and agenda remains on theme with the original title ... although it's blatantly political direction is crowded with contradiction Nas's conflictions always seem heart felt. The production is a bold but sometimes out of place musical canvas for some of the most impressive lyrical intercourse in the game. Cool and Dre show up, but it seems they saved the real banger's for Rick Ross. Stic man from "dead pres" produced some heaters though .... peep the guitars on "sly fox" with the slow flow of Nas taking aim at corporate media (fox news)...hell yeah I bet ya neck start nodding like superhead....umm, ah...scratch dat..... Track 7 check it out..... The single "Hero" is the most "pop" polished as far as production in my opinion and the track "fried chicken" with Busta Rhymes is clever and hott, but he fumbles the ball on a couple of joints (including Chris browns cameo), still the album remains surprisingly slightly intoxicating, like a couple of deep drags off some potent piff,or some light dinner wine. This is a very poignant piece of work at a time when sex, drugs and hiphop have all become synonymous. Nas doesn't need hiphop to define him.....this nigga defines hiphop... I almost forgot how important hiphop could be! ~peteyluv~
