Here, Mr Frenzy talks about some of the tracks on Violence Ambience:
Violence Ambience is a concept album, it's about the constant clash between violence and beauty.
In the Graveyard – "Guy and I were asked by filmaker Franny Armstrong to write music for her documentary about police racism after the McPherson Report. We wanted to help her make the case against the police and write the best music we could. The film included footage of the burial of the Telford Two – 2 black men who died in highly suspicious circumstances. It was so peaceful in that graveyard. I found a really mesmerising rhythm on the keyboard and I got on a spiritual vibe. Afterwards I felt weird. I'd enjoyed making the music and for a while I'd felt at peace but the reality of this situation was that these two men were dead - probably killed by racists".
Del's Story – "I was working at The Young Vic as composer on a rehabilitation theatre project for heroin users. (We actually produced a brilliant piece of theatre!) One day Del came in and told me what had happened that morning. I recorded his story and that night I laid his voice over a track I'd just written. It fitted perfectly, miraculously even! There were no edits, it was exactly the right length – it was uncanny" Del where are you now?
I'm the Daddy Now – "A sordid, red light tale of S&M power relationships. At the Swiss opening of La Menagerie de Verre (a play I'd written the score for) Luminous Frenzy threw a party for French film star Romane Bohringer. Luminous was DJ'ing and played this track, which I didn't recognise! (I'd had a few drinks ok!). I thought to myself, this is interesting, I must find out what it is. When I asked her she looked at me incredulously and said: 'It's you – you fucking idiot!' That was a revelation – I realised what I was doing was different and worthwhile"
Ecstatic Tube Journeys – "It's 1991 and Luminous is on the run from MI5 after spending nine months undercover infiltrating two animal research labs. She moves to London and takes me to a rave. 'Take this' she says, 'it's a Triple XXX'. Another revelation – on the way home the violent clattering of the tube sounds like the greatest symphony ever written – here I try to recreate it"
Menagerie – "Recently my friend saw video footage of the death of live exports protestor Jill Phipps. Everyone thinks of her death as a tragic accident. He says it was murder and I believe him. She didn't accidentally fall under a truck she was deliberately run over. We felt a connection to Jill as Luminous had known and respected her. When Nancy Phipps, who witnessed her daughter's death, described what happened on a TV programme I felt I had to use her voice. In the piece I tried to recreate the moment of her death. Afterwards all the beautiful animals of the world pass by and say goodbye".
The human animal has so much potential to create love and beauty in the world. Yet we are knowingly violently destroying each other and the planet on which we live.
