As a regular at the Gypsy Hotel (Barden's Boudoir) I know it's worth getting there for the first band, just incase you get a little gem. Last Saturday was one such occasion and I was, as is often the case, pleasantly surprised. Mainly by the fact that I has seen the first act just over a week before on a trip up to Oxford to see Imelda May with my mate chris and had really enjoyed them then
You kind of know what to expect at Gypsy Hotel, and it is good! Fair do's it cuts a figure in the burlesque scene. As always the place was rammed and we were to be treated to the usual range of niche and kitch burlesque (particularly enjoyed Ruby Fortune and her homage to the vinyl record) Alejandro Toledo and the Magic Tombolinos topped my night off perfectly with what sounded like an international mix of a gypsy persuasion before I had to make my way home (as my stilettos werein danger of causing me permenant damage)
My point, however, is this. The first act - The Long Insiders - are a band I have seen twice before (at the academy in Oxford the week before and ages ago, at the Troubador I think) but something has happened to these guys. They have always struck me as a band on the edge of something special with their great mix of on the money rythyms, cool surf guitar stylings and the silk and razors voice of the lead lady. Last saturday however, at the early doors time of 9pm they truly let rip.
I think it was roughly the same set as the week before, six stonkers building from lounge through rockabilly to a heart breaking finish with "All The Tears" (heard on their myspace - check it out - /longinsiders) But where last time the last number made it look like the singer might cry, this time it seemed she might actually break. Earlier in the set with the guitarist (nick kenny) wending hs way through yet another 50's influences solo, the bassist (simon Kenny) holding court with the drummer (dan) and lead vocals with one stilettoed foot up on the monitor speaker just waiting to tell that boy "No Baby No" (also on myspace last time I looked) I just knew I was in for a great night.
Get this band some drinks - and while you're at it - get me one - its thirsty work at the Gypsy Hotel.
