Current mood:  thankful
Category: Pets and Animals
Like a lot of people, Jonathan Safran Foer went back and forth between eating meat and not eating meat. If this is you or someone you know, then you need to hear about his latest book Eating Animals. The book explores the many excuses people use to justify eating animals—from religion to family traditions to "the way it tastes".

So if you're still on the fence about veganism, Eating Animals is a must-read. The book's already been getting people to lead a more cruelty-free lifestyle. Actress and 20-year vegetarian Natalie Portman said Eating Animals turned her vegan. Score for animals!

Not many of us can say we really know what animals on factory farms experience because we haven't been there—but Jonathan has. He ventured onto factory farms to share with you what the animals lives are like up close. What you learn will no doubt make you think twice before grabbing that piece of bacon and drinking that glass of milk. Here's a short excerpt from one of the chapters describing the typical cage for an animal on a factory farm:

Step your mind into a crowded elevator, an elevator so crowded you cannot turn around without bumping into (and aggravating) your neighbor. The elevator is so crowded you are often held aloft.

This is a kind of blessing, as the slanted floor is made of wire, which cuts into your feet.

After some time, those in the elevator will lose their ability to work in the interest of the group. Some will become violent; others will go mad. A few, deprived of food and hope, will become cannibalistic.

There is no respite, no relief. No elevator repairman is coming. The doors will open once, at the end of your life, for your journey to the only place worse (see: processing).

This is your chance to win one of three copies we have up for grabs. Just comment below with what you'd say to someone to get them to stop eating animals. Entries must be received by November 19. The three people with the most convincing comments will be chosen as our winners and notified on November 23.

Just so you know ... by commenting here, you're acknowledging that you've read and agreed to our privacy policy.

Also by commenting, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions.

What I've said to my friends about eating meat is stuff like "We're not meant to eat meat. Like do you have an urge to go kill a cow or something with your bare hands and then eat it raw?" then I get into details with our teeth and how they're flat and if we were supposed to eat meat then our teeth would be sharp and pointy like a carnivorous animal. Why do you think that people always say "eat your vegetables" and not "eat your meat"? Because meat's bad for you and vegetables are good for you. Duh. :) I tell my friends about how animals are treated in slaughterhouses and then when I offer to show them videos they refuse to watch them because they said that if they watched them they'd probably go vegetarian. I'm like yeah that's the point. I tell them about all of the meat alternatives and how much better they are for you. Most of the time, anyone that I try to convince to stop eating meat will usually respond saying that they like meat too much and they could never stop eating it, or that their body "needs" meat. It really annoys me that people can be so ignorant. So basically I've come to find that I can't really get through to anyone as far as eating meat goes, but I try.

Actually ive had a few conversations with people who have went veg because of me.
We spoke on morality issues and suffering and at times religion(more than one)And just general true love of animals and what that really means.

One of the most important things you can tell a person about why they should stop eating animals is to note that, regardless of what many people believe, Christianity taken as it should be, is a very animal friendly religion. I'm proud to be a Christian, but it disappoints me to see so many people taking our faith less seriously than it is needed to be.

I would tell a person (assuming that that person is Christian) that a meat eating diet is not a diet of God. Before the flood every human was vegetarian. It was only after the flood, where eating meat was a LAST resort that God told humans to eat meat. He also warned that by choosing to eat meat, humans would be the animal's enemies.

Regardless of whether or not one eats meat in the first place, God most definitely did not give anyone the right to torture and factory farm animals. Almost all food animals are kept in awful conditions. It's not like any real care is put into it. It's all about the money, unfortunately. The more chickens you can fit in a tiny area, the more meat they can produce, and therefore the more money they can make. It's dirty money and sinful.

Keeping kosher would be an improvement (the only thing grosser than eating meat or dairy is eating meat and dairy together), but it is still a diet against God. Whether or not someone believes that Jesus was vegetarian, it is still imperative that we do God's will by saving animals. God gave us dominion over animals to protect them, not to kill them.

Eating animals is not only showing that you approve of the torture, violence, and cruel things animals have to go through before ending up on your plate, but it also shows that you don't care about the life that got taken for no meaning at all.
Would you hang your baby by their feet in shackles and slit their throats, burn them alive, or club them?
Would you eat your dog or cat?
I don't think so.
You may not know how terrible it actually is to go through what these animals go through unless you actually volunteer yourself into their miserable lives and see for yourself.
Getting taken away from your mother and not even 2 months old, and the last things you heard from her was the screaming and cries she let out, begging them not to take you away from her.
Being raised in small, filthy cages, not being able to stretch your legs or enjoy the fresh breeze on your face or feel the moist dirt between your toes.
No one would want to go through this or should have to go through this.
What makes your life more vaulable than theirs?
We were all created equal, with the same rights.
People just think it's okay to murder animals because they don't have a voice and can't defend themselves.
We however, have a choice.
Animals cannot protect themselves, they are defensless and hopeless.
We need to be their voice, their only hope is us.
We can make a change and save the precious lives of animals.
They are depending on you.
Go vegan and live a more cruelty-free lifestyle!
So many would appreciate and thank you from the bottom of their broken hearts.

I would say to someone:
Eating animals is wrong. Fish can feel when they're being crushed in the many fishing nets that capture them daily. Cows still cry when they see their mothers or children being carried off to slaughter. Chicken scream as they're thrown into boiling hot water or having their feathers plucked. Pigs pray for mercy as they are crammed into trucks after being tortured for long months only to head to the slaughter house.
Eating meat is not only unfair to animals, but it is also unhealthy. Meat is very dirty and disease infected, and not all of those diseases can be cooked out. 1 piece of beef can contain up to 1,000 larva. In every package of chicken there are signs of E. Coli contamination. The animal protein in meat can also raise your chances of contracting cancer.
After you give up meat or animal products completely you will have more energy, your skin will clear up, and you will be healthier.,[:
GO VEGETARIAN,! Whoooo,!

i would tell them that every animal experiences a life, like we do, and ask them if they would want to experience the life of a chicken in a hatchery, or a cow in a factory farm; born to die for humans to eat. Then i would tell them about all the health benefits, all the environmental benefits, all the benefits to humans and all the psychological benefits.
if they still didn't care, i would call them heartless :)

Cool...it's really hard to convince people that it's no different to eating a pet or one of your friends... I ask people how many cows & sheep they have actually met... they all have different personalities. They also say they need meat to survive, to which I say I've been vegan 14 years now & still feel very much alive, by their reasoning I must technically be dead or unhealthy...the opposite is true!

Meat is the result of killing an animal. It's the disgusting insides of a dead thing. You could cook a dirty shoe and put some ketchup on it and maybe it'd taste good. You could cook a baby and maybe it'd taste good. If you're willing to go on all of these "no desert, carbs, sugar, or calorie" diets, you obviously don't really care about what tastes good because you're so willing to give it up. Then why won't you give up meat? Sure it may taste good, but it's bad for you and the planet. You're willing to drive a smart car, save water and energy, recycle paper and plastic, but you're not willing to give up eating meat. Meat is worse for the environment than all the cars and transportation in the world combined. If you want the planet to not die a painful death, stop making animals die a painful death.

There's my sad attempt, haha.

Eating animals is not natural or humane these days.  Animals are abused in the factory farms where they live.  Chickens have their beaks cut off and live in extremely poor conditions.  Male chicks are literally thrown in a grinder cause they have no use for them!  Pigs, who studies have shown them to be as smart and in some cases smarter than dogs, have their teeth and ears cut off and are castrated at birth with nothing given to them to reduce the pain.  Cows used in the meat and dairy industries suffer as well.  The mothers have their babies taken away from them when they are only a few days old.  Fish are treated as if they don't feel pain when intact they do!

If you look at humans we aren't naturally supposed to eat meat.  Our anatomy strongly resembles that of plant-eating creatures.  For example, like herbivores (but unlike carnivores), human's colons are long and complex and our intestines are ten to eleven times longer than our bodies, with long gastrointestinal systems, meat decays as it moves slowly through the gut, exposing people to meat's harmful by-products.  Carnivore's intestines are very short to let the meat pass through them quickly.  Also, those who consume larger quantities of meat tend to consume less fiber, because there is no fiber in meat.

Human physiology and anatomy resemble herbivores in many other ways. Our saliva contains digestive enzymes (unlike carnivores); our dental incisors are broad, flattened, and spade-shaped (not short and pointed); our canine teeth are short and blunted (not long, sharp, and curved); our molars are flattened with nodular cusps (not sharp blades like many carnivores); and our nails are flattened (not sharp claws). Of course, only humans must cook flesh to make it tender enough to chew and to kill the bacteria that might otherwise kill us.

here's what i said when i converted my friend to vegetarianism (and i later used it as a part of a monologue in Theatre ):

i for one, choose not to eat meat to protect my health and the animals. i feel ALOT better about myself now knowing that i'm a healthy, peaceful, caring individual with a good heart, that is both strong and full of love for the beautiful animals that walk among our lands, swim through our oceans, and fly across our skies. we are animals, just like them. and EVERY animal deserves to live in harmony without the fear of becoming poison in our bodies. You could feel this way too if you decide to leave meat off your plate. it truly does make a difference; by not eating meat, you save about 100 animals a year from being mercileslsly slaughtered.
The worlds not going to change, YOU have to change. I hope that you take the lives of innocent animals into consideration when you plan your next meal.

Do you know where that came from? It WAS a beautiful animal, which was locked up all its life, tortured, fed hormones, and then it was slaughtered, ground up and then served to you fresh off the dead carcass.

It's a thin line between eating a chicken, to eating your dog, to eating your neighbor. We all have thoughts, feelings, and families. What makes you so much better than everyone else?

because we are all just souls in these bodies wandering around on earth until our next faze in life...No one is better than an animal...Because we have no control over the bodies our souls were put into...Can you honestly tell me if you were an animal, you would find this torture fair? would you not want someone to save you from the agony?...would you not want to be free?

Why would you want to eat a poor innocent animal when there are other delicious options out there? Vegetables and fruits are one thing to consider because they are more healthy; but then there's also fake meat like boca burgers and morningstar products. There's so many options out there that are vegan-approved and not made of animals. Animals have rights too and i think people should be prosecuted for executing them in the manner that they do. Would you want to go to jail because you ate an animal? You should at least try something different and if you don't like the other options out there, even though i'm sure they will suit your personal needs, then so be it; at least you tried. But don't just say you don't like it until you gave it a chance.

Humans participate in a lot of natural and unnatural things. Eating meat is a natural part of human life. The food chain says so...Right? Wrong! A pig, cow, chicken, etc. may mean nothing to you, except a "tasty" meal. But what if you knew what horrors that now lifeless animal had to suffer through just to fill your tummy for the night? What if you knew the bacteria and diseases that it would bring to your very own body? People raised to eat animals do have a choice. Let your compassion take over, and speak for those we can't understand. They are strong, and they are speaking. It takes a heartless person to ignore their words. Vegetarianism requires dedication, but, after a few weeks, removing meat products from your body becomes and feels natural; the way it should be.

And, remember, companies like Boca and Morning Star offer plenty of delicious veggie and vegan-friendly options! In fact, they taste better than the real thing! :D Talk to your parents about making the switch, and give it a shot! Chances are, you won't ever want to turn back.

P.S. Vegetarians are more attractive to the opposite sex. Because they eat less toxins that come from meat products, their skin glows and tends to have less blemishes. Vegetarians are rarely obese, thus having slender, sexier figures. And, who isn't attracted to someone who goes against the norm to stand up for what they believe in? [=

What's your favorite animal?  If you won't eat it, why would you eat another animal that has spent its whole life suffering, just for you.  The animal was raised to be killed, so you could buy it.  Over your lifetime, you will be responsible for the deaths of thousands of animals.  Can you live with yourself?
