SURGEON http://www.surgeonband.net http://www.myspace.com/surgeonband Set to tape earlier this year under the guidance of cantankerous indie god Steve Albini, Surgeon's Angry Guest EP is a cleaner, meaner affair than the Philly quartet's past work, including that under their previous name Bumrunner. The shadowy band still thrives on the tension between singer/bassist Sean Boltron's chirping, androgynous vocals and guitarist/songwriter Lydia Giordano's twisty, surreal leads. Surgeon's not afraid to dig for inspiration in mainstream classic and modern rock, and yet the players darken the corners considerably and sneak in prog-metal undertones. The EP's seven songs are as tight and crunchy as we've come to expect, their increasingly eerie vibe culminating in the standout closer "Walking Fire." (Doug Wallen, PW)
VICTOR VICTOR BAND http://victorvictorband.com/ For everyone out there who wishes the White Stripes had stuck to their primordial roots, allow me to introduce Victor Victor Band. Unlike Jack and Meg, Jamie and Danielle Victor are still very happily married (recently celebrating their fifth anniversary) and they're all too happy to go on exploring the rugged terrain of rotgut riffing and basement thumping. It sounds simple enough, but Jamie's a good enough guitarist to fill any open spaces with big fat swirls of psych, and Danielle is with him at every step, firmly planted on the floor while he goes spinning and lurching around the stage. Plundering the blues with a fuzzy garage ferocity, Jamie's voice goes from a thin quiver to a rebellious howl when needed, and his spirited antics are all too photogenic. (Doug Wallen, PW)
THE SYKES http://www.myspace.com/thesykesphilly Imagine Keith Richards falling up the stairs after another blood transfusion... ..then Boy George walks over and helps him to his feet, and the three dead Ramones suddenly jump out of the nearest dark corner and beat the fuck out of everyone in the room.
DANGEROUS PONIES (Chrissy from Bee Team/Naughty Naughty Nurses) http://www.myspace.com/dangerousponies The Dangerous Ponies is a 7 piece queer and allied band from Philadelphia, slathered in gold and rainbows. They play pop/rock/carnival hijacked by kinder gardeners music where everyone sings. They are designed to make electric sing alongs, and rock dance along jams to melt your face.
DJ FCK YEAH (Modern Love, Suck My Left One) http://www.myspace.com/modernlovephilly Hosts two punk, indie rock, and riot grrrl nights at The Dive.

THE BEE TEAM http://www.myspace.com/thebeeteam http://www.citypaper.net/articles/2007/10/18/the-bee-team It's hard not to like the Bee Team just from the way they look onstage. Rock signifiers like American Flag bandanas and sleeveless T-shirts bump against their inviting, friendly stage presence, as they innocently implore the audience to take their shirts off. Singers Josh Craft and Chrissy Tashjian may well be in line to become the Johnny Cash and June Carter of modern-day punk-folk. A Grand Ole Opry of freaks, the group's pairing of banjo picking and male-female vocal interplay lends itself to lyrics about the weird small things that go on in our real lives. Tashjian's clear, beautiful voice can even distract from moments like the line in their catchy theme song "Birds and Da Bees" that requests someone "just give me time, give me space between your thighs." But somehow, the Bee Team succeed in making all of their lyrical topics seem as pure as their melodies. They closed their set by getting members of the audience onstage to help harmonize the Beach Boys' "Vegetables." (Spin.com)

JOE JACK TALCUM (Joe Genaro from The Dead Milkmen!) http://www.jacktalcum.com/ http://www.deadmilkmen.com/ Joe Jack Talcum co-founded the Dead Milkmen in 1983, performing guitar and some vocal duties until they broke up in 1995. During that period, and still today, Joe makes solo home-recordings of songs that could only come from the mind of a slightly warped genius. An edited list of projects that Joe has been involved in over the years (besides the Milkmen) would look something like this: Ornamental Wigwam, Touch Me Zoo, Jiffy Squid, We're Not From Idaho, Sock, The Town Managers, The Big Mess Orchestra, Butterfly Joe (the band), Consumer 925 and The Headaches. Currently, he plays in The Low Budgets and The Cheesies, while also continuing to record and perform solo.
