[cross posted from www.beautiful-bass.com/weblog - cuz that's how I roll]

Short version - I remixed an Imogen Heap track and you can hear it here.

If the player doesn't work for you try this link

Longer version.

Twitter. It's all about Twitter.

I follow a few artists I admire on Twitter. Among them is Imogen Heap.

As part of a promotion called "Twestival" to raise money to improve the quality drinking water in impoverished regions, Imogen Heap released the vocal tracks to a song that was never produced. She only had the vocal parts.

FULL DETAILS HERE

So I downloaded the tracks and built the song you hear above. You can do one also - till mid March 2009 I think.

I played / programmed / produced everything - there's bass, drums, guitars, synth, sound design. All the stuff I most enjoy doing. Playing, writing and knob-tweaking.

Owing to nothing more (i'm sure) than the high quality vocal tracks from Imogen - this is the most commercial sounding thing I've ever produced.

Of course, I also just ADORE Imogen Heap. She writes great songs, has a gorgeous voice and is a killer producer/sound designer in her own right.

She's the real deal, and time totally vanished for me while working on this track. That's a sign I think. :)

Secret evil plan part ii has me considering doing another take on the track all together.

But then again - maybe not.

Hope you enjoy. Donate - and try your own version!

I spent a weekend and a weeknight or 2 to write, record, edit all the stuff. Few more hours of mixing/producing a little at a time over the course of several days. I learned by doing it.

I've had that for years. It was in the closet the whole time you were here last year. It's COVERED in dust, wont stay in tune and only sounds passable through gobs of scrotum smasher

That's fucking bad-ass Jeff. You should get a female vocalist to record some more a capella tracks and write to them. That could be very interesting. .. ..I just listened to this thing 3 times. It's totally boss my friend. One question: forgive me if it's in the details on that other page (I didn't get there yet but it's my next stop) but would you be allowed to release it on a CD or anything?

I can't sell it. People can download for free. The internet IS a CD now. :) ....For me - it was only about the creative challenge of building a complete track with nothing but the vocal. ....I had a lot of fun and I learned a lot by doing it. ....

Yeah I didn't figure you could sell it (or if you'd even want to if you could) but was curious. I didn't know how stuff like this works legally. .. ..Almost all the mixes on that site are the same reverbed/delayed synth piano pad stuff. Your mix has bite. Yours is my favorite of all I've listened to (I've checked out about 30 or so of them on there). Good work sir.

thanks man! I'm not sure why everyone seems to approach the song the same way. Probably cuz the vocal is kind of soft.

Hard-ass music with a soft vocal is one of my favorite combinations. Your mix is right on point. I think if you made an album of stuff leaning that direction you'd be surprised how many people would come out of the woodwork to buy it. :)

I like that vibe too. Ruiner Severhead is just finishing a version of this song. Should be up tonight or tomorrow.

It's fuckin' BA, brother. Most of the other people doing their mixes of the tune are turd burglars with nothing original to bring to the table. Your mixes kill.

Wow, another impressive bit of work Jeff. It has a 'JEM/queen of the damned soundtrack' kind of vibe. .... Thanks adding another mp3 for me to whore out, over play and eventually get sick of. :)

I think your work on this is amazing. Nice mixture and good synergy. Not something that just anyone can do....
