Kepi Ghoulie/Flav Giorgini – Spilt 7"
Squinty Joe Records – 2008

Ahh, what a brilliant release, 4 acoustic tracks, 2 from each of these punk legends. Starting with Kepi Ghoulie, who's famed as lead singer/bass player from the brilliant Groovie Ghoulies from California. The 2 songs on here are excellent, Wolf Girl and Back To The Garage are simple enough songs, but are incredibly catchy and as well as Kepi on vocals and acoustic guitar, there is a guy called Dan Janisch who adds home-made bass, vocals and box into the mix, lovely stuff. Flipping over, and this was the main reason for wanting this is Flav Giorgini from Squirtgun and now Sinister '66. I caught a solo set of his a few years back in Canterbury and was instantly won over by his shear brilliance and have been waiting since then to hear some new material by him. The first track, Run Away is shows how much talent this guy has, a really nice acoustic track but then loads of different layers come in and it builds to something quite brilliant. Flav also adds in some electric guitar and keyboard and has managed to get his brother Mass (Screeching Weasel/Squirtgun) to add some backing vocals and saxophone and the legend that is Dan Lumley (Screeching Weasel/Common Rider) to add some percussion. Fight To Breathe is the final song on here which again I loved, with Mass this time adding in bass and percussion, Matt Hart adding vocals and Pat McClimans adding in some real nice Dobro parts. I thoroughly enjoyed this release and will certainly be keeping an eye open for future releases by both guys and anything else that Squinty Joe Records will be releasing.
