14th June Sun @ The Empress (Melbourne)
A 12k records (New York) Show case event, featuring Seaworthy,
Amplifier Machine and Solo Andata getting together for one night only
in Melbourne.
Over the past 10 years, USA label 12K, has earned a reputation as one
of the most eclectic homes for avant-electronics. In June the label
celebrates some of Australia's finest sounds, presenting 3 bands on
it's roster joining up for a one off 12k Showcase event in Melbourne.
Seaworthy - Bringing sounds off his recently released 1897 record,
explores melodic and experimental approaches to the construction (and
unravelling) of minimalist sound scapes from looped guitar, warm
drones, piano, electronics and field recordings. His guitar pieces seem
to share a firm grasp on melancholy, in combination with a whole
soundscape of natural world activity, complete with birdsong, flowing
water and other such tried and tested components of acousmatic
microsound.
Solo Andata - “A looming tapestry of undulating, post-rock, free
jazz-tinged, minutiae-detailing, electro-acoustic brilliance, Fyris
Swan's chest-tugging magnitude is a striking testament to the role of
time, space, and technology in composition” - XLR8R, This performance
sees one half of Solo Andata (Kane Ikin) previewing tracks from their
forthcoming self-titled release on 12k, a distinctly cinematic affair
dense in light, shade and texture culminating in often devastating
crescendo's.
Amplifier Machine - Featuring James Dixon (Swordfish, Supagroop) on
guitar, Korg & piano, Seth Rees (The Spheres, This Is Your Captain
Speaking) on drums, violin, samples, piano & guitar and Alex Jarvis
(Automatic, Black Cab, Registered Nurse) on guitar & drums
combining their talents with the end result bringing to mind a kind of
atmospheric, finely poised cinematic soundtrack, a restrained and
patient exploration in the placing of sounds that emphasize space,
straight lines, texture, and feint melancholy.
