Sly Stone said that in the beginning of his acting career he'd been kicked out of 1500 agents offices. Someone commented that there aren't even that many agents in town & he said EACH individual agent threw him out 5 to 6 times based on his odd speech & facial features.
Couldn't pay for food or heat but he said he knew if he got a normal job he'd be seduced back into that life and he wanted to keep that hunger as his drive to succeed.
Sold his 1st screenplay for $100, he hocked his wife's jewelry, couldn't feed his dog, & sold it for $25, said it was the saddest day of his life
THEN, he wrote Rocky in 20 hours after seeing a Muhammad Ali fight, he felt so inspired by what he saw.
He was initially offered $125,000 for the script. He demanded that he star in the film and that the deal was contingent upon that. They initially wanted Ryan O'Neil of all people & Sly rejected the offer based on that even though he was TOTALLY broke & couldn't get work as an actor.
Then they came back and offered him $250,000 NOT to star in his own movie & subsequently they made a final offer of $350,000 but he still demanded that if they wanted the screenplay, he would have to be in the film, that he WAS Rocky!
In the end they gave him $35,000 & points in the movie to minimize risk because they assumed it would fail. They gave him a million to make the movie AND it grossed $200 million at the time.
Funny anecdote is that the 1st thing he did was try to find his dog to buy it back, the guy refused & drove the price up again and again, and he eventually paid the guy $15,000 and a part in the movie, Rocky!
The point is NEVER lose your hunger & NEVER give up!
The secondary point is, I always thought Sly was hot & now I find him even hotter!
Check this whole story out along with sexy pics of Sly back in the day! Yum!
