I remember when my first album "Open Book" hit Itunes in 2006 and how happy It made me. This was way before an artist were able to pay $35 and get his/ her album up for sale online. I emailed Itunes asking them how can I get my album for sale on Itunes and they emailed me back a month later saying here's you link to your online store. This was before an artist was able to promote albums to friends on myspace and actually make sales. Unlike now where you get band spam to fill up your inboxes all day. This was before Twitter and Face book was only for grown ups and college grads. I asked my manager at the time to make all my music free download because the decline in sales and he said if you make it free than the music value drops like the American dollar. At that time I listen but later was so frustrated that I changed it to see what would happen despite being on all major download sites for sale. I was shocked to see the stats of 350 downloads my first 3 days and 1500 by the end of the week. I soon learned that fans are just not buying albums anymore and its not the recession either. Hip Hop has gotten so congested with artist who lack good content and creativity that fans are just not surprised anymore and more bored at new music then ever. If I could count the number of rappers who heckle me to buy there CD in Times square Id be crazy rich by now. They tell you everything from Its the best beats you ever heard to I'm the hungriest out here and I'm on my grind son just for a sale. Then for you to pop in the CD and out comes doodle through your speakers. You might have as well sold me wet news papers in a brand new Mac book G4 box cause that's how I feel when I listen to it. Now its getting to the point where fans don't even wanna hear rap music unless the artist has been on the radio or has serious buzz in the streets to see if worth listening to. I've been getting more buzz just posting free mix tapes on line then when it was for sale on Itunes. We went from single tapes at the Wiz, to the Wiz shutting down to albums Lps at Tower records to Tower Records shutting down now Itune downloads then what's next? Itunes shutting down.
In conclusion, the value of Hip hop is like the American dollar losing its value, its just not powerful anymore. Unless we turn it around quickly with something that captivates a large audience we will be telling our kids kids soon how we were rappers once and there was music called Hip hop that affected the world once. Im sure they will be rappers, producers and hip hop culture still alive but just not as rich and fresh as we once had it. So enjoy it as much as you can and do it because you love it at least when its over you can have some of the best stories to tell someone.
