I am currently reading a book by Alan Weisman called The World Without us. Early in the book there is a quote and that quote is below in blue. I would like for everyone to share their thoughts on the quote and answer the question related to it.

The firmament is blue forever, and the earth
will long stand firm and bloom in the spring.
But, man, how long will you live?

-Li-Tai-Po/Hans Bethge/Gustave Mahler
The Chinese flute:
Drinking Song of the Sorrow of the Earth
Das Lied Von der Erde

Once I have completed the reading of The World Without Us, I will share my thoughts on it. Additionally, consider picking it up so that we may all discuss together once that time comes.

This is taken from the Bible if i remember correctly, there was a man who got a vision how Earth was BEFORE man walked the Earth and he said and i quote "Earth was far more beautiful and graceful before man lived on it" i think it's somewhere like that

we will live, hopefully pushing our knowledge to its full extent, until we eventually destroy ourselves...over the millenia, after we are extinct, a better model will thrive in conditions we could not survive, and push the boundaries of understanding even further

A moment of Birth, a moment of death. What lies between is just an illusion. All Things are only vessels for the energy stored within. The reality of it all, is that the vessel and energy do not understand their relationship. Both moments are shrouded in mystery.

"Credulous at best your desire to believe in Angels in the hearts of men Pull your head on out You Hippies and give a listen Shouldn't have to say it all again The universe is hostile So impersonal Devour to survive So it is, so it's always been ..." Tool: Vicarious....

A second thought...Strange I am...

Imagine the Theory of the Earth as a petri-dish.
The micro-organisms placed within have used up the protoplasm and the evolution of the Micro-organisms becomes self devouring.
The specter of the universe takes note. The culture complete. Not failed But proven this is not the micro-organism to carry on.
The petri-dish is now cleaned and placed on a self. Awaiting a new. The Earth, and all it's glory, all it's inhabitants, has ended.

Sounds like a wonderful book and one well worth reading. Great question to ponder... and at a time when I am beginning to study the Dao (Tao) in greater depth. An objective in Daoism is that we become at one with the Dao, and when we become ONE with Dao, we have immortality.

Damn :)! very good question, I personally think that man is already dead. All of this is just an illusion or should I say, all of this "Life" shit is because of the time differences between Earth and the Other (dark) side. You think you are still alive and breathing, but in fact, as a consequence of the infernal time delay, you are long forgotten while you sit in your comfortable armchair on a beautiful otherworldly beach. To make all of this more interesting, the same otherworldly beach that you are sitting on, will soon be covered with oil and destroyed by it. Therefore, my conclusion is that we are already dead, we are part of the newer ending death to death circular process. With other words: "We are dead as much as we are alive"

Now, with that being said, forget all the long term man is doomed theory. I feel that is an easy way out. If you veiw the quip as a whole, as mankind, it is speculation. If you turn it into a personal question that each of us answer about ourselves... well then it could be a catalyst for change. And with our own personal answers and a goal to help elongate our existance we may in turn help each other. So... by each of us making a change for the positive, something you may do may snowball into helping future generations. Ask yourself everyday, "what can I do better?"

I just want to say - I really like what "Karma" said! So very true... and makes me think of a Gandhi quote: "Be the change you want to see in the world." It really does begin with each of us... and as we join together, we can make changes for the betterment of humanity.

Man as a whole will exist until we inevitably self destruct. Sadly it is in our nature and it is near impossible to prevent. We can see the seeds of the future in the fruits of today.

But what is the world without the observer? If a tree falls in the woods and nothing is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?

Surely, in the immediate physical realm of existence, our lives are nothing more than a passing thought floating along on the winds of constant change. The Earth, Nature, will indeed carry on without us in what we perceive of as this physical world. In reality, we can only destroy OUR world, not THE world. Nature is forever resilient, and will eventually reassert its dominance over us and the planets systems. Its more or less a matter of whether or not we can achieve a harmonious balance with nature in our lifetimes, both as individuals, and as a civilization, or are we doomed by our own arrogance and ignorance to keep pushing the buttons and tipping the scales until Mother Earth says enough is enough and wipes away all of us and any evidence of our paltry little constructs from this planet. If we can maintain a true balance within the natural environments that we ultimately come from, return to, and draw life from, then we can return to a more natural footing and weather most any storm that might come our way, for we have resilliancy as well. Yet, if we let greed and ambition trump or place in the order of things, if we step too far out of line without seeing the errors of our ways and making ammends with Mother, then we have little hope of ever making it past our as yet still primitive stage of existence as a species. Species come and go all the time. Why should ours be any different? While we have the power to outlast the best of them and survive and flourish as no other creature has that come before us, there is no guarantee that we will not eventually overstay our welcome or piss off our most gracious host.

Best thing one can do I think is to just strive to be constantly aware. Aware of your place in the grand scheme of things, in the role you play as a part of a larger organism called Humanity, and aware of your own individual day to day relationship with the planet and its ecosystems, as well as your fellow inhabitants of this planet, all creatures great and small. Be aware and strive to do your best to be genuine and reverent towards these things, and to give back at least as much as you take, if not more.

And overall, as a collective species, we really need to take accountability and rsponsibility for our unchecked population growth. Its choking the world supply of resources, and its killing the world and ourselves. Mankind is capable of so much good and beauty, but too much of a good thing can turn into a nightmarishly twisted version of what it should be.

Still, I take quite a bit of comfort in knowing that, regardless of our end in this physical domain, the world will carry on for quite awhile afterwards, and nature will continue to reshape itself and create new forms of life out of the grand grab bag of endless possibilities.

we will all live until our work is done...the sole purpose for life is to make this world a better place and to advance our eternal souls til we are pure and free from all negativity. when that is done, the human race will be done...the only life will be the other side.

In a literal sense of the word, I will "live" until my body dies. But, taking into account my impact on the ideas, places, and people around me, I will live forever just as the firmament is blue. I am space and time.

How long will I live?? I shall live as long as my body, my environment and the development of new technology, will allow..

Metaphysically, I shall live, in some form or another, as long as there is someone living, here to remember me, or I have done something with my life, which itself will be remembered by others living and thus be remembered by proxy..

The firmament is not blue forever, but exists, only for as long as the fundamental laws that govern it's existence are in operation..There is no extra-natural phenomenon that allows transitional forms of existence, there is no reason to believe, or expect, that there is..

The answer to this question is in the hands of all people on this planet. Man will not continue as long as the earth, according to the history of extinction among all animals, but we have the choice to make our stay longer. We have inhabited this earth for a very small fraction of the time it has been here and it will continue to be here long after we are gone. However, we are quickly destroying it and it is only a matter of time before she needs to recover. If the earths temperature continues to rise at this rate, the damage could be irreversible and earth will eventually become another Mars. If we choose to not be ignorant to what we are doing and make changes, perhaps we can live in harmony with the earth as long as nature will allow.

Perhaps only humans perceive the sky as blue, we can only guess at how animals such as bats and dogs see it. Perhaps if the sky made a sound the bat would see it as blue? If it had a smell the dog would smell it as blue?..I do agree that the celestial plane is consistent, and I suppose that it would be blue to someone, somewhere at all times.....The earth will forever be, in relativity to the time span of humans. How long will I live? Irrelevant. The length of our physical lives is something that we can not have control over. It is something worth pondering, but not worth obsessing over. Perhaps another question: how can we all, including those things that bloom in spring and everything under the firmament, live fulfilling lives while positively affecting everything we come into contact with? ..Now that's a zinger...Every question is a good question. Thank you for asking.....-André....(EP)

Well what i think the author means that our lives are so short and unsignificant in comparison to the earth and the unsiverse. But Humans tend to think their are special unique and immortal but there was much more before us. There will come a time where no people, no humans and no race will stand but the earth will still stay firm. ..I guess I will not last forevermore I wish my soul/mind could the way i think how i am but that will be dead when my body decays. I guess it's just imagination to hope it could last.

Emmanuel,
I've just ordered the book to borrow from my local library. I'm gonna give it read through when it arrives, when I've finished reading the two books I have borrowed about the Falkands war. (And the sports books, novels, magazines, on line blogs etc that I'm having difficulty finding time for, lol, such a hectic life I lead!)

Peace and light,
