Earth Rat 4706: 7 February 2008 - 25 January 2009

The Rat is King of the Oriental Zodiac, although no one really has a convincing reason why except residents of Orlando, who live in the constant shadow of the Rat.

A Rat Year is like being a rat in a Nebraska granary or a Manhattan sewer: a time of abundance and plenty, opportunities and good prospects. Lots of swarming, exchange cheeses and corn, running from zombies and Predaliens, fornication, trade, commerce and dumpster diving.

It will be marked by fluctuations in commodities and stocks as globals demands change. The world economy in general should bounce back in a Rat year as the markets shift focus. Business will be on the upswing no matter what, and fortunes can be made for investors and small-business owners alike.

A Rat Year is a time of hard work, activity, and renewal. This is a good year to begin a new job, get married, launch a product or make a fresh start. Ventures begun now may not yield fast returns, but opportunities will come for people who are well prepared and resourceful. The best way for you to succeed is to be patient, let things develop slowly, and make the most of every opening you can find. People born in an Earth Rat are said to be logical realists, shrewd, charming, ambitious, and inventive.

This is also the time to make long-term investment plans, as the year of the Rat serves to see us through the years to come. Ventures begun at this time will be successful if one prepares well. But do not take wild chances or unnecessary risks: the year of the Rat is still ruled by the cold of winter and the darkness of night. Those who speculate indiscriminately and overextend themselves will come to a poignant reckoning...

On the whole, this will be a happier year than most: free from explosive events and wars and with far less catastrophes than, say, the years of the Tiger (1998, 2010) or the Dragon (2000, 2012). Nonetheless, it will be spicy. It promises a lot of bickering, bargaining and petty arguments that will do little harm. A congenial time that will find most of us socializing and enjoying ourselves.

Best Year for:               Dragon, Monkey, Pig/Boar

Good Year for:              Rat, Tiger, Rooster/Phoenix

Not-So-Good for:        Snake, Goat, Dog

Craptastic Year for:     Horse, Rabbit/Cat, Ox

I sincerely hope it stays that way! Usually the effects of the Chinese year as it passes aren't felt so quickly. We're just three days into a new element (Earth, which will help you as an Earth Horse) which the next sign will also share (Ox is the yin aspect of Earth next year). You won't know til it's too late; something about qi flowing downstream from past to future, and carrying the 1 in sidereal-tropical conversions.

No fuzzy six-foot bunny companions here, el Ilustre ah-Pook is all Tiger and sometimes owl. Harvey is in the office down the hall.
