Formed in 1978, Washington, D.C.'s own quintessential new wave/punk group The Urban Verbs left quite a legacy for being around only a few short years. The band crafted their unique sonic signature while working in their rehearsal studio in the basement of 930 F Street, a location that soon became the original 9:30 Club. They were the first D.C. band to play at CBGBs, a show at which English electronic music wizard Brian Eno was in the audience. Eno was so taken by their music that he immediately wrote the Verbs a letter, stating, "I was extremely impressed by your performance tonight (at CBGBs). It struck me as a whole new set of ideas about how to structure sound… I would sooner produce you than me, at this moment." Eno went on to produce live recordings of the band which were used as their demo tapes. After two albums on Warner Bros records produced by Mike Thorne and Steve Lillywhite, the Verbs disbanded, but left a legacy that influenced many aspiring D.C. musicians in the early '80s, including Ian MacKaye, Dave Grohl, and Henry Rollins. Since then, the Verbs have played only one reunion show, in 1995 at 9:30 Club (the last show in the original location). Now, thirty years after their first performance in Washington, D.C., The Urban Verbs will appear at 9:30 Club for one show only. They are recording a live CD which, when released will include the Eno produced live demo tracks from CBGBs, as well as new material and favorites from their two Warner Bros LPs. See firsthand the music that captivated Eno, Thorne and Lillywhite and legions of their fans locally and internationally.
