Chris M, local DJ and promoter known for his Le Disko party series, is debuting a new weekly party with a slightly different vibe on April 2.
“I'm taking le Disko in a completely different direction; now it's going to be jazzier, very soulful funky house music.”
Chris’ new pet project is Suck and Blow, a Thursday night party taking place on both levels of Zeppelin’s Underground, or ZU. Every week, he and fellow soundsmiths (DJs Rich and Eddie Chalace this first week) will spin jazz-funk house music on the top level.
It’s a far cry from Chris M’s more characteristic electro, which he says he still enjoys.
“In my personal quest for new music, I rediscovered the roots of house, and came across a lot of really beautiful, feel good, jazzy dance music.”
As a reference point for all you house heads, Chris points to the early 2000s work of artists like Lil Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, Kerri Chander, King Britt, Joey Negro, Mark Farina, Miguel Migs, JT Donaldson and Tony Humpries.
On the bottom floor of Suck and Blow, local DJ Blainetrain will spin between showcases by two local bands that change each week – this first installment, it’s By Tomorrow and Concentrated Dopamine.
Le Disko debuted in December 2006 to a rapturous response and continued on a semi-monthly basis, pumping local scene kids with the latest in electro and indie remixes. The last installment before a hiatus was at Blue Iguana last summer, after stints at various venues including Club Warehouse #1 and 1914 Lounge.
Chris M also had a weekly Thursday night residency at 1914, dubbed Get Hyphy.
This 18-and-up party, however, marks an evolution: same people, different atmosphere. Check it out every Thursday: $5 for 18–21-year-olds, free for 21-and-up, 2609 N. Mesa.
