Subatomic Pieces are finished.
This band was started by three really close friends. We were young and honestly, we didn't know what we were doing. But, we played. And, we had some magic moments.
As our lives took us in different directions, I decided to carry the torch and make it my mission to keep the band alive.
To be honest, though I cherish being able to play with the great musicians that I have, the last few years just hasn't really felt like Subatomic Pieces. It seemed more like a half-hearted, glorified solo project than the band that I started with my friends all those years ago.
I have no regrets. While I may have played the dictator at times, particularly in the making of Hold Out For Science, I feel like the sound of the band and the quality of the songs could only have been born out of those early, tight-knit, "childhood pals" years when we were learning together what music could mean to us.
I feel like it was worth every drop of sweat and every second of heartache to realize our original dream of playing a few shows with bands that we like and having a real cd of our music. I've devoted nearly everything that I am to this band. I have no doubt that I have made mistakes. I have no doubt that I've made poor decisions. But, I believed in the music.
Subatomic Pieces always was Chris Harris, Brent Wall, and Jeff Benefield. We got by from relying on friends and acquaintances to fill the gaps. But, the band really was three dudes from Choctaw who were really turned on by music.
By now, we've all three moved on and our tastes have changed. I can't speak for Brent or Jeff, but I really don't have any desire to continue making Subatomic Pieces music or working hard promoting it. I'm ready to move on to new things. I'm ready to be excited again.
I personally want to thank every single person who ever played with the band. I particularly want to thank those who have played shows with me in the last few years. It was a dream come true to be able to have so many of my favorite musicians playing in the band with me. And, the cd would certainly not have been possible without the support and participation of so many people in the local music community.
I also cannot even begin to explain how much I appreciate everyone who ever came to a show, bought merch, wrote reviews, or in any way supported this band. The Conservatory and Opolis gave us opportunities that we can never properly thank them for.
Brent and Jeff are currently collaborating on a recording project called Bel Epoch. You can hear what they're up to at:
http://www.myspace.com/belepochI'm currently playing bass in a band called Ancestor. We'll have recordings and shows for you to check out soon. I'll be playing some solo shows and cooking up ideas for new band projects. I've got a few things going already. Stay tuned!
Thanks again. Being in this band has been a really amazing experience.
